If you’ve been anywhere near the cinema in recent weeks you’ll have noticed the return of an absolute classic older film by James Cameron. In 1998 he gave the world a movie that would turn into a historic blockbuster film, Titanic and its doomed voyage. On 10th April 1912, the ship set sail from Southampton England on its maiden journey to New York. We all know tragedy struck on 14th April when it struck an iceberg and sank a couple of hours later on 15th April.
The story has been adapted into several movies. We’ve touched upon the James Cameron film before that in 1958 was “A Night To Remember.” This is regarded as one of the best film adaptations of the story. There was even a TV series entitled Blood and Steel as well as one just simply named Titanic. Has the story and events of that night ever translated into the world of video games?
Titanic As A Game. Do Any Exist?
There is actually one in development now in Unreal Engine 5 and was reported at the start of development to be coming to consoles as well. This game was originally known as Titanic Honour and Glory. Mind you that article was from 2014 and the game has only just released a new playable demo. The listing stated a name change and release platform.
Titanic: Project 401 will be available on Steam upon release. A free experience, DEMO 401, is available now as well as the opportunity to join the THG Patreon! A Patreon membership not only funds our reconstruction of Titanic but entitles you to special perks and access!
They aren’t the only games. Starship Titanic is a loose interpretation from the mind of Douglas Adams. The one Titanic video game media I am most familiar with having played it a few times is Titanic: Adventure Out of Time. The game description on Steam says
Intrigue and adventure await you on board the Titanic, the most famous ocean liner in history. As a British secret agent on a vital mission, it is up to you to change the course of history as you explore the world’s most luxurious ocean vessel in all its original splendour.
Navigate the amazingly detailed 3D reconstruction of the doomed ocean liner and rub elbows with high society from the turn of the century, all while searching for clues and solving challenging puzzles that could alter world history.
Along the way, you can move freely around the ship, exploring the Titanic’s decks, corridors and staterooms – all of them so perfectly reproduced that they were chosen for use by historians during a scientific expedition at the actual wreck site in the North Atlantic.
Then, on the night of April 14, 1912 you plunge into a race against time. Both spectator and participant in a multi-tiered drama, your own survival and the fate of millions hinge on your actions during the last hours of the sinking ocean liner.
Maybe this game on Unreal Engine 5 could plug the hole of an adaption of this story for gamers. Though adapting a true story to a game is hard to do in any circumstance, not just with the Titanic. The closest we see to real life is either in telling of events such as The World Wars, games based on other battles, traumatic world-changing events, or ancient events. For example the Chernobyl disaster. However, we recommended some Halloween horrors and one horror called Kholat. This is based on the events of the Dyatlov Pass Incident.
Stay tuned for more from Lv1 Gaming and comment your thoughts if a titanic game can or even should be made in the future.
