I got to check out the latest Magic the Gathering set, Marvel Super Heroes, alongside the rest of the LV1 Gaming crew out at Summer Game Fest. I got a chance to preview the set at MagicCon Las Vegas, but it’s always cool to actually rip some packs. Honestly, my favorite part of our block was getting to see some folks learn and play Magic for the first time. I kept joking that pretty soon we’d have the whole LV1 Gaming crew out at the upcoming MagicCon Atlanta.

Avengers Assemble!
While Fame and Baron were learning to play, I sat down to try out the Marvel Super Heroes set on the Arena app. They had two preconstructed decks, Heroes and Villains, respectively, but I wanted to check out the Villains. This card is an absolute menace and was in my opening hand, so that game went pretty quickly. I also had to take a moment to briefly chat with Mark Rosewater, the head designer for Magic the Gathering. There’s nothing breaking there. I just wanted to thank him for designing some of my favorite sets

Shout-out to Wizards, because they have so many avenues to sit down and learn the game. The Beginner Box comes with a couple of decks designed specifically to walk people through the basics. When I returned to Magic after a hiatus (it happens to all of us), I’d also noticed that their Jumpstart product line feels like the next step. Each pack is literally half of a 40-card deck, so you can get a lot of mileage out of one booster box. I’d also noticed that they put in a lot of heavy hitters with alternate arts, so I find myself ripping those packs from time to time.
Wizards always does a great job with their goodie bags, but I was especially hyped to get a Secret Lair and GameGenic loot in this one. I’m trying to keep this post from sounding like a walking advertisement, but they really went all out for the Marvel Super Heroes release. I’ll be looking forward to dropping some coverage for The Hobbit and Reality Fracture in the upcoming months!
