Playing through Hogwarts Legacy got me thinking of all the RPG’s I’ve enjoyed over my years of gaming. The RPG genre is one that, only a few years ago, I got back into playing after getting seriously burned out with it at the turn of the millennium. I can remember the RPG that tempted me back into the fantastical worlds, so its only that naturally will make my list of recommended RPG’s.
Where do I start with a list of recommended RPGs? I can immediately think of one right off the bat, and I revisited it not long ago. However, if you don’t game on PC, you won’t ever get to experience it unless it gets remade or remastered and ported over to consoles. Remember, these are only personal choices, not definitive titles in the genre. If you have any games you like, drop them in the comments section and tell me what you think of the games I’ve chosen.
A List Of My Recommended RPG’s.
Most of the games I’ll be mentioning are action RPG games. They are in no particular order or ranking. I have played all these games and enjoy them equally.
Hero Quest
Based on hardcore RPGs and following some of the earlier ones, there is Hero Quest. It was based on an adventure board game where players had to find treasure and solve tasks on a board grid. You have to battle against the equivalent of a dungeon master, which is the evil wizard in this universe. Space Crusade, a game with features similar to Space Hulk and Warhammer 40,000, was also recently released.
Eye Of The Beholder
This little game launched all the way back in 1991. You and your party are in a 3D dungeon, and unlike some other RPGs of the time, you played in a first person view with a point-and-click interface. According to Wikipedia, “The game had 2 sequels, Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon, also released in 1991, and Eye of the Beholder III: Assault on Myth Drannor, released in 1993. The third game, was not developed by Westwood, which had been acquired by Virgin Interactive in 1992 and created the Lands of Lore series instead.”
The game Neverwinter Nights did receive mods which were sort of a fan remake to the Westwood classic.
Vampire The Masquerade Redemption
I recently revisited this absolutely classic RPG. It is from one of the biggest names in all of RPG gaming, the Vampire series, which includes Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. This is a title that I’ve probably put more hours in than all the others on this list combined. I’ve played through this multiple times, and if this ever got a remaster or remake, even on console, I’d be grabbing it in a heartbeat. I really enjoy this game, and I feel like fans of the Vampire franchise should give it a playthrough.
Skyrim
What else can be said about this Bethesda classic? It’s appeared on virtually every platform and will probably continue to appear on future consoles. I have it on Xbox One with the new Anniversary Edition and on Nintendo Switch. It’s a game full of things to do and very much deserving on any best RPG list. It has a never-ending quest system and a world you really can spend days, hours, or years in, and that is not including the multiple DLCs and fan-made content that continue to be released to this day.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher franchise is probably the most well-known and popular among most gamers. It has appeared not only on numerous platforms, but also on nearly every modern operating system. That’s not all, we also have multiple TV series and anime spinoffs. This gets on the list as it’s the game that tempted me to dive back into RPGs again, and boy was it worth it.
Kingdom Come Deliverance
This medieval RPG is probably high on this list and very close to being my favorite on this list. The combat is extremely well designed and unique. It’s an era I love, and the world is fantastic to explore with seemingly never ending paths and detours to get lost in. I really enjoyed the story, and the DLC is high quality from what I’ve experienced, as I’ve haven’t played all of it.
There are many more that i could include on this list like the Final Fantasy series, The Legend of Zelda series. Even Dragon’s Dogma or Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. However, if you are someone just getting into or getting back into RPGs, these are the games I can recommend right now. Tell me what you think of these games I talked about.
