Chainsaw man is the story of Denji and his devil powers received from a devil dog. There is a lot more to the story and plot however I’d like to not spoil too much. This series is one of my favorite new-gen manga for how dark the story can get. In this article, I will go over the strongest points of the series however as much as I don’t want to have spoilers there will be some so be warned. This is Chainsaw Man: Dark Shounen At Its Finest, I hope you enjoy it!
The writing for this series is simply great, the author Tatsuki Fujimoto really knows how to write a darker twist. With characters using more cruel and horrifying methods to get what they want. Even the main cast is more morally grey in how they each approach what they go through. And the world also reflects this as well. With entire nations being a part of more sinister plots to have more of a way over other nations an example of this is Japan.
This is a spoiler so be warned!!! The Japanese government will often deal with devils to keep control over its own populace as well as to have power over other nations. This is only Japan and from what we the reader can tell from dialog from characters it isn’t the only nation to do this. Within this world, devils are feared and fear is power, especially for those in power.
The Power Of Devils
In this world hell is real and devils are born from human fears, fears such as the fear of guns, swords, or chainsaws, and they are very violent and dangerous. Of course, humans made pacts with these beings to gain power, whether it be to fight devils or for more evil reasons. Each devil has their own unique abilities that are related to what they are the devil of. Let us take the blood devil which has taken human form power.
Power has the power (hehe) to control her own blood, using it to make weapons to fight. Power is just one example, however the most fearsome of these devils are the primal fears. In part one of the series, we the readers have only seen one of these primal devils, the Darkness Devil. I won’t go into its powers but it is truly a scary being to face.
The character each have their own traumas that throughout the series affects them. We see how they each deal with their past such as in the case of Denji just shutting it out completely by putting mental blocks to forget what he has gone through. Tatsuki Fujimoto does a really good job of taking a look into characters’ minds and how things such as loss affect them. Let’s take Aki for example.
At a young age, Aki saw his little brother just be killed by the most fearsome devil in front of him. For years he sought revenge to the point of making multiple pacts with devils even giving years away from his life force to achieve it. Aki is a tragic story that is seen with many others within the series and to see how he grows and to see the end of his story is great and sad at the same time. We see him slowly overcome his trauma but never forget it, much like trauma in life.
