Horror is a staple in all mediums, from films to comics, and most importantly, video games. At the top of that list is one of the scariest games in recent years. A little indie title known as The Mortuary Assistant. Right now, we are also in a time where more and more games are getting adaptations. Whether it’s movies, TV shows, or even anime adaptations. Just look at the Fallout Series, Devil May Cry, and Castlevania anime, and especially the Sonic and Super Mario movies. Now you can add this horror name to that list, as the Mortuary Assistant gets a film adaptation coming in 2026!
For those who don’t know the story of the game, you play as Rebecca, a young assistant on her first night of working in a mortuary. Her Boss, Raymond, calls her to come in late at night and work on embalming some bodies that came in. However, Rebecca begins to realize that this is no ordinary night. Shortly after arriving, she finds out she’s been targeted by a Demon for possession. Now, with the notes left by her boss, she has to perform occult rituals while still performing her job. All the while dealing with her traumas and the torment of the demon after her.
The game offers multiple endings depending on how many times you play it, and slowly uncovers the secrets within as each night passes. It’s because the game offers multiple endings that make it curious which direction the movie will follow. Will it go the route of the most deep and thorough of the endings, also one of the hardest that may be considered canon to most? Or will it completely change up the formula and make something entirely brand new? There are so many possibilities on how it can all play out. All of which are equally exciting and frightening!
The movie will be streaming exclusively on Shudder in 2026, so it will be some time before we see the movie. For those who want to play the game, however, you can get it on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It has been 3 years since the game’s launch, and it still holds up to this day. So tell us if you have played the game, or if you are excited for the film, in the comments below.
