If you are on Steam, you may be aware of the ongoing Next Fest celebration. This is a celebration of upcoming games that started on February 6 and end on February 13 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The event is a period where several live streams are taking place and various games are getting demos. Games like Ravenbound, Planet of Lana, Boundary, and an upcoming remake of Sherlock Holmes Awakened. Another remake getting a mention is System Shock, a game we have covered a lot in the past and which is also getting a new demo. That’s a franchise I really enjoyed and I took a look at the previous demo to see how it looked and held up to the original release.
The original game launched nearly three decades ago, all the way back in 1994, with the sequel following in 1999. The remake was announced all the way back in 2015 by Nightdive Studios and is currently set to launch next month on PC and console. If you pre-order on Steam you get a free copy of the enhanced version of System Shock 2. Unless otherwise stated, it appears that this is a Steam-only offer, which intrigues me because I loved the sequel even more. We don’t even know if there are plans to bring the enhanced release of the sequel to consoles.
The New System Shock Demo Details
We have a revamped version of the demo that I tested in August last year, and it’s available now. They have listed the various changes to the demo. Let’s look at what Nightdive changed with this new demo, with the changes listed:
- A brand new playable introduction sequence
- Refined hacker and enemy animations
- Lots of refinement to enemy AI
- New enemies (at least seen only in medical)
– Hopper
– New Security 1 Bot - Added clutter and debris to the levels
- Vending machines
- Scrapping and recycling
- Transdermal dispenser
- Ammo depot
- Mod kits
- New Cyberspace levels
- Lots of new sounds and audio enhancements
- New UIs and menus
- Controller support
The demo is seemingly only on PC at the time of writing. Unfortunately, there is no way to play on a console for those who wish to do so right now. If you are cursios about the style and feel of the System Shock games the Bioshock franchise is deemed the spiritual successor to this franchise. Sadly a third System Shock game looks much less likely to happen, though we can hope things change with that. As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts, so why not get in touch and share them with us?
