Some big news for fans of the deep dark crawler by Red Hook Studios, as they’ve announced DLC for the first entry, 10 years since its launch, in a sudden announcement last week that sees a few features and characters from Darkest Dungeon 2 sliding back to the original.

The Fire’s Edge DLC boasts quite a bit for a spurious update: The Burn mechanic from DD2 will be made available, allowing players to punish their enemies anew; there are 3 new districts for your hamlet, new trinkets with novel mechanics, new events and stories, and the biggest note is new playable characters to add to your roster—The Duelist and The Runaway, both helping to add a fresh feel to the game.
For those who want an even fresher feel to the game, Darkest Dungeon will be getting new mod tools to help cater the game however they like. The extent of these modding tools is yet to be announced, but with The Fire’s Edge launching on August 18th, we won’t have to wait long to see for ourselves.

While the game itself is quite a few years out by this point, it is refreshing to see a developer not only still care about previous releases, but Red Hook going so far as to introduce sequel mechanics into their original; it certainly speaks to a certain passion for the games they put out, and while this certainly doesn’t indicate a resurgence to content for the first Darkest Dungeon, this passion is likely going to cycle back into DD2 and future projects.
