A few older games are gradually receiving next-gen upgrades. Some were in desperate need of an upgrade. While others did not appear to require the effort. For example, the Resident Evil remake trilogy recently received a next-gen upgrade. Digital Foundry even put them through their paces, with mixed results. These upgrades, however, were free for those who already owned the game. Next-gen or current-gen upgrades appear to be happening more frequently, which is great, but they will not all be free.

Biomutant is another game that has received a next-generation upgrade announcement, which was apparently leaked back in May. THQ Nordic has said very little about Biomutant getting a next-gen upgrade before the announcement. This, like the recent Capcom updates, was announced as a free upgrade for those who already owned it. This has been the most common method of upgrading titles, but it is not always the case. Sony does not provide free upgrades for all first-party titles. For GTA V, Rockstar provided no free upgrade path. They did, however, reduce the cost of it for a limited time. The negative is that when you go to buy now, the offer has already expired.

Next-Gen Upgrades Are Usually Free

Naturally, we want our games to look as good as possible. If anything is upgraded, we would prefer not to have to buy it again. For Example, upgrades do not usually cost extra for PC games. Assume you have a PC game that makes use of ray tracing. You’ll be fine if you upgrade your GPU to an RTX-enabled card. Also, keep in mind console upgrades have not been as fully adequate as expected. I recently played Deliver Us the Moon on PlayStation 5 and found the upgrade to be lacking.

But what if the game is over a decade old? Is it appropriate to charge an upgrade fee or a discount? If you already owned Death Stranding, an option to upgrade it was available. That upgrade was relatively inexpensive, but should we have to pay for it? You had to pay a small fee for Uncharted Legacy of Thieves, but you got a free ticket to the Uncharted movie for a limited time.

The well-received What Remains of Edith Finch looks like it’s going to receive an upgrade. However, we don’t know if this is accurate though history suggests this will be an official upgrade. So will Annapurna this month confirm an upgrade and will it be free? As for next-gen upgrades, most people want them to be free. However, do we have the right to expect them to be free? It’s a question I’ve seen mixed opinions on in the gaming community. We’d also love your input on this topic so get in touch and share your views.
