Atomic Heart – A First Look

Atomic Heart

As you know we brought you the details of when this upcoming title was finally launching. Now Atomic Heart is available to everyone after a long waiting period. If you’re playing on Xbox, the game is available at no extra cost with a Game Pass subscription. I decided to put the early stages through their paces, and all footage seen is captured on an Xbox Series X. Don’t worry if you purchased on PC and are concerned about the Ray Tracing. Tom’s Hardware can explain the lack of the feature even though Nvidia has used the game in promoting RTX cards.

In fact, we even have an RTX demo which can be found here. It seems this feature is to be applied later on in the games life. Anyways back to my thoughts and opinions of Atomic Heart. First off it’s similar to much loved games like Bioshock and Wolfenstein: New Order. By that I mean the world is being presented as an alternative history shooter. It’s set in a utopian world where people and their robots live together in harmony. That was until the robots rebelled and fight back against the humans that created them. The game explained fairly swiftly why the robots turned and why they attacked mankind.

Getting To Grips With Atomic Heart

When we get more into the game, we have RPG staples like skills to unlock, weapon upgrades to craft and eventually new weapons as well. It offers more of a true RPG feel than games like Wolfenstein. However, it takes a while to get into the action, and why we have a talking glove isn’t entirely clear. Here’s some footage captured early in the game.

The combat really works well and feels natural, even in the early stages of the game. There are a variety of combat methods and stylish kills to pull off, even in the opening sections of the main game. Visually, the game really shines, as we can see below. There is time and care crafted into this slightly off putting yet beautiful world.

The Rest Of The Game

The main character is very likeable, but sadly, I don’t know much about him at this early stage in the game. Hopefully, this will be clarified as the game progresses. I would say that the story has had a promising start and has really hooked me in. The question is, have the writers created a narrative that can last? The game has been so much fun to dive into and explore so far.

As for how the mechanics in game work I do have a couple of issues. Not every part of the game gives you an way point marker which is annoying since you also get no map. When we look at Dead Space for example we have a map. The option to manual save is frustratingly limited at times. You can only save in rest rooms which are safe rooms but if you play games like Resident Evil then this is nothing new. I much prefer the option to save from the menu.

The robots are very well designed and are a challenging enemy that will try to knock you down or even dodge out of the way. You also need to learn the first skill you use, which is the ability to scan for any goodies. It’s wise to search every room as the resources you find may be invaluable later on. Is it, however, worth paying full price for? At present, I really need to play more and get further into the game, as there is a lot of promise. The question is, will the game fulfill that and maintain the fun vibe that’s been set in the opening hours? At the time of this writing, the Xbox Series X version is downloading a massive 67.54 GB update. That’s pretty large compared to the already huge 77.5 GB file size the game takes up.
