It’s a good time for gaming remakes; we just had a fantastic Dead Space remake, and next month sees an iconic horror reborn in Resident Evil 4. That’s not all that’s on the horizon we have several remakes on the cards. Ubisoft is remaking Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Konami is giving us an updated Silent Hill 2 made by Bloober Team, which unleased Layers of Fear. Alone in the Dark is also set to return as are Max Payne and Max Payne 2. If we look back over time, can we pick examples to possibly decide the best game remakes?
Deciding The Best Game Remakes
Deciding on the best game remake is hard. There have been so many over the years. Capcom also remade several of its classic survival horror franchises. They remade the first three games of their Resident Evil franchise. Konami on the Game Cube remade Metal Gear Solid in the form of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. This is by no means a definitive list; this is more my personal opinion and thoughts. You may disagree and come up with others. If you do, let me know in the comments section. Again, these are my personal thoughts and opinions based on the games I enjoyed and played over the many years of gaming.
Shadow Of The Colossus
Bluepoint revisited this classic over a decade later. Originally released way back in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, Bluepoint carefully crafted and released the remake in 2018. They also did a remaster along with Ico. It was rebuilt completely but kept the spirit of the original. This is a game worth playing if you have never had the chance to. It is a PlayStation classic.
Resident Evil
Capcom revisited their classic title and rebuilt it for the Game Cube. New story sections were added, and existing parts you thought you knew didn’t. For instance, you may have thought you had cleared a room only to return to find Crimson Heads. Capcom put so much love into this game that it is truly worthy of being in one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
Demon’s Souls
Another remake by Bluepoint, this time for the PlayStation 5. The original Demon’s Souls was the introduction to the Souls games that have now captured the hearts of millions of players that love to have challenging gaming experiences. This remake was so faithfully recreated with modern technology that it looked like the newest installment. Released in 2020 this remake would go on to score near-perfect ratings across multiple sites. It is now regarded as one of the best and highest-rated remakes of all time.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
The original Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most beloved RPGs and PlayStation games of all time. The story of Cloud and his gang of friends has stood the test of time since 1997. The recent Part 1 remake takes the original and expands it greatly. This means the game will come in 3 parts.
Made on the Unreal Engine and released in 2020 we finally saw the return of this iconic game after waiting for many years. Since it has changed from the original game it is worth playing both games just to see the difference in not only the story but in the technology as well.
Resident Evil 2
This game is considered by many to be the definitive remake. The original 1998 game was a huge title, and the 2019 remake takes that and completely enhances the experience. The Resident Evil 2 remake received praise for its presentation, gameplay, and faithfulness to the original. It has gone on to receive numerous awards, including winning “Ultimate Game of the Year” at the 2019 Golden Joystick Awards. The game has sold over 11.2 million copies as of January 2023, outselling the original Resident Evil 2. It was followed by remakes of Resident Evil 3 in 2020 and Resident Evil 4 in 2023.
