Square Enix is in the news regarding their Avengers release. This Crystal Dynamics title was launched last year. They are more known for the Legacy of Kain franchise and Tomb Raider especially the first couple of titles in the reboot saga. These were Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Square Enix have had their annual performance report which was covered by VGC. This was where president Yosuke Matsuda addressed shareholders and one topic of conversation was Avengers. It’s a release that has had mixed feedback from fans. This wasn’t the case with the recent Marvel title from Eidos-Montréal from last month. That was the Guardians of the Galaxy release.

What Square Enix said to shareholders

Yosuke Matsuda felt that Crystal Dynamics may not have been the best studio to develop Marvel’s Avengers. They told shareholders Square Enix must learn from the “disappointing performance” of the Avengers release. And what he said gives a very damming assessment of the work of Crystal Dynamics

Marvel’s Avengers was an ambitious title for us in that we took on the GaaS Service model.

We overcame a variety of unexpected difficulties in the final phase of the game’s development, including needing to transition to work-from-home due to the pandemic. We were able to surmount these challenges and release the game. But it has unfortunately not proven as successful as we would have liked.

Nonetheless, taking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams.

While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome. We are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented. How we go about creating new experiences by incorporating this trend into our game design is a key question that we will need to answer going forward.

The next step for Crystal Dynamics

They still have content for Avengers. The PlayStation exclusive addition of Spider-Man has yet to appear which is the main content fans are waiting for. They have just removed XP boosting microtransactions from the game after fans complained. We also know they are helping develop the upcoming Perfect Dark game.
