Recently, Sega released the demo for the much anticipated return of their iconic ninja in SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance. The legendary side-scrolling action returns, slashing demons one slice at a time. The demo offers gamers a comprehensive experience of the game’s initial stage, The Oboro Village, serving as an action-packed tutorial. Expect traditional 2D gameplay and visceral combat, combined with gorgeous fidelity, smooth framerates, and a modern art style. As an old-school Shinobi gamer from the days of the arcade and Sega Genesis, my time with the newest edition to the series did not disappoint. Those who have waited won’t have to wait much longer. SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance arrives August 29, 2025. (All images and video via my playthrough on an Xbox Series X)

SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance Demo Impressions
In SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance, developer Lizardcube successfully brings another legacy Sega title to modern times. The classic hack n slash gameplay is addictive to old players, and also to new players of the franchise. You return as protagonist Joe Musashi, the famed ninja, who returns to avenge the Oboro Clan. In your quest to avenge the Oboro, you will encounter students of your clan like Tomoe, the shopkeeper, demons, and also your wife, Naoko, early on. The depth of the story starts to unravel immediately, which is an instant way to get my engagement. The art style matches and succeeds the majestic animation that Lizardcube previously delivered to gamers in the highly successful Streets of Rage 4, which is another Sega legacy title. Players can expect fast-paced 2D platformer action with a lot of skills to learn during the adventure.
To defend your honor versus Lord Ruse and his horde of demon lords, players must acquire skills and gear. Skills consist of Ninjutsu, Ninpo, and Ningo skills, and also 17 combat moves. They can be acquired and learned from boss fights, secrets, elite squad rewards, the shopkeeper, and more. The gear screen is where you equip the Ninpo skills you unlock to your liking, as well as equip your passive and combo amulets, and katana. Along your journey, you can use deadly skills with your katana and kunai that boost your attacks, combos, and also learned skills. The more you attack and dodge, the more you boost Joe to activate Ninpo Cells. Acquiring gold is the in-game currency system that gives players the ability to purchase amulets, attacks, and Ninpo from the shop.

SHINOBI Demo Final Verdict
My playthrough of the demo was a blast, allowing me to get a feel of the basic attack system and movements while also focusing on reaching the stage boss, Kozaru. The boss fight was fun and engaging, and also tough for a first major encounter. Learning the pattern to defeat the boss is key in 2D platformers, and that remains true in Shinobi. I found myself engulfed in the fast-paced action, the challenge, the gorgeous visuals, and the story. After completing the demo, I was rewarded with a glimpse of the different environments, skills, and obstacles to discover in the full game. I recommend that everyone install the SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance demo on their platform of choice, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, or PC.
