Pixelated Violence of Dave The Diver

Pixelated Violence

The biggest shock I experienced this year was the violence in Dave The Diver. Let’s be clear hunting and fishing are not violence free activities. I know this to be true. But hot damn, the way it is surprisingly presented in the pretty happy-go-lucky pixelated world of Dave The Diver was a shock to my system. My first time playing this game was during a charity stream (with amazing voice acting) for The Battle For Charity 2024 event that you can currently donate to now. Back to the point, the first time I took the spear gun from Cobra and shot a fish. My eyebrows immediately shot up. The spear gun launching into the fish, a pool of blood, and the aggressive back and forth of the fish fighting for its digital life surprised me.

My reaction was captured during the livestream and I even brought it up to the chat.

Bro I did not know Dave The Diver was a murder game like that..

It is amazing how the fish violently dying is overshadowed by the art design and sushi bar. For me in some strange part-time philosophical deep-thought moment. Dave The Diver showcases the not-so-peaceful journey from freedom to freshly sushi. It is always funny when games present themselves as cute and cozy. Then either hide a dark story or extreme violence such as beating a fish to death with a shock baton.

Vibrant and Colorful Pixelated Violence

This was not written to put this enjoyable and pleasant game down. To be honest, I was more surprised by how long it had stuck with me. Floating about in my head. A game about fishing and owning a sushi bar got me thinking about violence. Not the blatantly violent games I play on a regular basis, but the small amount of time with the pixelated violence of Dave the Diver. So what does this mean? Probably nothing but kudos to MINTROCKET for being one of the least violent games I’ve played this year while inspiring me to think about it more than usual.
