Life Is Strange: Double Exposure Brings Back Max Caufield

Life Is Strange: Double Exposure

The recent Xbox and Bethesda showcase unveiled several exciting announcements. If you missed the live stream or need a recap, you can read on for the highlights. The full show is also available for viewing if you wish to witness all the revelations firsthand. One game that made its world premiere at the showcase was the highly anticipated Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, a new entry in the Life Is Strange franchise. The last time we discussed this series was when the remastered collection was announced for the Nintendo Switch.

The Life Is Strange franchise first captivated audiences nearly a decade ago by introducing Max Caulfield in the original game. A prequel titled Before the Storm followed in 2017, offering a glimpse into the past. In 2018, the series took a fresh turn with Life Is Strange 2 and the demo The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, featuring a new set of characters. The next installment, Life Is Strange: True Colors, arrived in 2021. Now, with Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, we witness the return of the beloved Max Caulfield. The Xbox Wire post provides insights into where the original protagonist finds herself today.

When Max was an eighteen year-old photography student, she manifested the power to rewind time and became entangled in the dark side of Blackwell Academy, a high school in the small town of Arcadia Bay.

In Life is Strange: Double Exposure, we pick up several years later, finding Max trying to build a new life for herself as an artist-in-residence at the prestigious Caledon University. Max has spent years on the road photographing desolate spaces, keeping everyone at a distance, as the decisions of her past still hang heavy over her.

The trailer helps explain the plot of the story and how Max’s powers have slightly changed and we also have a live stream that provides more on the game.

More On The Story Of Life Is Strange: Double Exposure

Fans of the original game will know the game had two endings which were very memorable. How would a follow on story represent these two timelines? An article by Eurogamer covered the news of the live stream and how Deck Nine will “support and respect whichever ending you chose” in the original game. This is what they had to say.

We knew that this had to be something special. We knew we had to respect the two unforgettable endings to the first chapter of Max’s story, while also crafting something new, something fresh that echoed Max’s past challenges even while it moved Max’s personal story forward.

Felice Kuan, Narrative Director

It was really important at Deck Nine that if we were to make another Max adventure that the game we’d have to respect both those endings. Life is Strange: Double Exposure does that very thing.

There’s no canon ending in our book to the first game. Double Exposure will respect both endings in Max’s thoughts, her journal, her SMS, her interactions with other characters, what she opts to reveal about her past to her new friends, it’s all reflective of that final choice.

Jon Stauder, Game Director

We know the game will import player choices as the Eurogamer article says this will be handled early on. As for release it will launch on the following platforms. PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S will see the game on 29th October with a Switch release planned. The Ultimate Edition gives you two weeks of early access to the game’s first two chapters.
