LV1 Gaming had the opportunity to go to PAX West 2024 and get hands-on with Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (KCD2). This series, developed by Warhorse Studios and published by Deep Silver, gives you the ultimate medieval experience. In KCD2 you will once again play as Henry of Skalitz a young man in Bohemia set on getting revenge for his murdered family. Now we had the opportunity to play about 30+ minutes of KCD2. Mainly, to get a feel for how your actions affect the story and world around you. Let’s talk a bit about the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 gameplay we experienced at PAX West 2024.
Building Upon Greatness
First off, this game has numerous small details that make this world feel real. For instance, if the town guard catches you at night without a torch, you may face fines. Even the town folk warn you about this potential penalty. Also, the genuine combat from the original title makes a comeback, with a few tweaks to fit each weapon’s intended style of combat. Also, they simplified the lockpicking minigame! Previously, you had to use both analog sticks to pick locks; now, it’s as simple as holding down the left trigger and using the right analog stick. The combat felt smoother—I don’t want to say easier—but I did defeat the swordmaster in a duel during my playtime.
The world is bigger, and it’s not just more forest to explore. The city you start the demo in is larger than a few of the ones combined from the first game. KCD2 is not a medieval simulator; it is very much an action-adventure RPG with realistic combat. I was relieved that they did not oversimplify KCD2 to reach a wider audience. Warhorse Studios listened to the community, improved upon a strong foundation, and added more. Personally, my goal during my first playthrough will be to make a small fortune as a blacksmith and alchemist. Naturally, KCD2 offers more than just combat. The RPG mechanics will allow you to evolve and personalize Henry.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Gameplay
Without spoiling the quest, the demo starts with Henry witnessing a swordmaster in a situation that branches into a few different alternatives depending on how you respond. Everything from a grand heist to a banishment from the town can take place depending on the choices you make. If you had not chosen to interact with the swordmaster, you could have completely missed this side quest.
Branching paths, realistic combat, and a lived-in medieval world came together in a short demo to prove that KCD2 is a title worth being excited about. You can watch me fight with the swordmaster below. If you’re looking for more information about KCD2 and its February 2025 release, check out the official website.
