Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – A First Look At A Medieval Return

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

Around two years ago I revisited a game that was a game I really enjoyed at launch: Warhorse Studios action RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Upon my revisit, I realized that the game could benefit from an upgrade. However, we have more than an upgrade available now. What we have is a sequel to the game, as Warhorse Studios brings us a continuation of the story of Henry from Skalitz. This month saw the release of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2; now it’s time to take a look at the game and what it means for our former blacksmith’s son.

So what is the story of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 all about? The official website describes this as a “gripping tale of revenge, betrayal, and discovery.” The setting ranges from the bustling city of Kuttenberg to the forests of Medieval Bohemia. What we know is that the sequel follows directly from the events of the original game. Henry has to face the allies of invading Hungarian King Sigismund in the middle of a civil war. Now for those of you as well as Henry, the character of Hans Capon is one you should remember. Now let’s look at what the game is like to play and what Warhorse Studios has changed from the original release.

The Reality Of Playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Below is a compilation of gameplay; all of this has been captured on the PlayStation 5 Pro. The first thing we will notice is how much the game has come on visually. We can see this by looking at the level of detail in the environment. The original game featured a world that was incredibly realistic and vibrant in many aspects. The sequel has taken the quality up a notch, and we have a world that can at times look photorealistic. Maybe one day they can apply what they used to update the original. But for the sequel, we have such an impressive world and one with a lot of depth. In fact, until you dive in, you can’t really appreciate the world Warhorse Studios created.

We now have a vivid and realistic depiction of the world that Henry would encounter during his time in medieval Europe. Therefore, we need to look at the tools Henry will have while navigating this expanded world. It was not the most forgiving, but the original had some of the genre’s best combat. You had to remain vigilant to avoid meeting Henry’s demise. We could break into chests or buildings or even rob some unsuspecting NPCs.

The Mechanics And Tools To Survive Our Medieval Journey

Unsurprisingly, the sequel maintains the same combat strategy. The control mechanism for striking various parts of the body has been tweaked and refined, and it is much easier to pull off various sword strikes, block them, and strike them back. With that in mind, it would be foolish to think that swordplay and combat are now an easier experience. This is definitely not the case, even with Henry’s increased combat experience. We still need to be mindful of how we approach combat, especially with multiple enemies. During an early mission, multiple enemies and poor decision-making led to multiple deaths. Consequently, when I took a more strategic approach and used a mixture of combat and stealth, the mission fell more in my favor.

Another mechanic we have is the ability to rob various characters throughout the world. We can rob the character directly so we learn the art of pickpocketing. The design is similar to the original game but with a more refined approach. Like the combat, we also need to be more mindful, as it is a touch easier to mess it up and alert them. Your actions can affect your reputation in the game and ultimately affect the future of certain events; you need to be mindful. Since fans of the original know how difficult lock picking was, it has improved greatly. Inventory and skills are a similar design to the original.

Summarising Our Medieval Experience

Being a fan of the original, I feel this offers even more than the original game. I have not found myself bored or fed up with the experience. With that in mind, you can always return to some missions when you have better gear. When the original game launched, one big complaint I had was that the fast travel system could crash the game. This was particularly frustrating at times, as it could easily result in the loss of several hours of progress. We now have a quit-to menu, which not only saves the game but also restores the original save method. On top of that, I have used the fast travel a few times throughout my journey. Thankfully, it’s been a trouble-free experience so far for me. This means that in well over a dozen hours of gameplay, I have seen no crashes of any kind.

In my opinion, the game is indeed worth it. I do feel Warhorse Studios has really crafted an enjoyable and immersive RPG. The game is excellent at teaching you how to play it. Thankfully, it doesn’t overly guide you, nor does it harshly penalize you for your lack of experience. For fans of the genre seeking a robust experience, I believe this game meets their expectations. This may be the end of the story for Henry, but I look forward to seeing the next Warhorse title.
