Gran Turismo 7 career mode and why it needs to be online

Not that long ago we brought to your attention an unpopular aspect to the upcoming Gran Turismo 7. What we saw in the Gran Turismo 7 career mode, the game needed a constant online connection.

Which meant fans had mixed views. Some took the view of they have fast Internet so it didn’t matter. Some threatened to boycott the game. It also highlighted the fact that if the servers went down the game mode was unplayable.

So did we ever find out why?

Polyphony Digital has released some information on this. This came from an interview with Eurogamer. This was with the series creator Kazunori Yamauchi who gave the following information.

The requirement for the online connection isn’t specific to the Cafe. It’s just to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data, so that’s the reason for the online connection. The online connection is required for the campaign mode.

The only part of the game that doesn’t require an online connection is the arcade mode, because that has no effect on the save data, so that’s possible. But anything that has to do with the save data requires a connection. For example things like the livery data as well. That’s something that is downloaded from the online server.

So if you travel and take your console and game with you no Gran Turismo 7 career mode?

If you don’t have an Internet connection, you can only use the arcade mode. No doubt this news will upset some. Needless to say, fans will still have mixed feelings on the news. Does this feature need to be present to stop cheating on a single-player mode? Would it matter what someone said else is doing with their racing career? As always we would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
