Dying Light: The Beast—We Played It At Summer Game Fest

The Beast

Techland showed out at this year’s Summer Game Fest Play Days. Not only did they bring a playable version of Dying Light: The Beast, but they also designed the room to mimic Castor Woods, where the game takes place. Before reaching the room where the Dying Light station is, you had to navigate through a large bloodstain, symbolizing the final moments of an unfortunate soul. Then walk through a path of fallen leaves and an old electrical junction into a dark room where the game is waiting for you to play it.

No lie, I was waiting to be scared by a zombie or two. Enough about the atmosphere of the play area, let’s jump into the actual gameplay. Here are some key rapid-fire points: guns have returned, cars have returned, nighttime resembles the original Dying Light more closely, the graphics are at a top-notch level, the lighting will be a standout feature of the game, and the parkour remains elite as usual. They gave us around an hour of playtime, and boy oh boy did I use it. I spent a few minutes fighting basic zombies to fully experience the enhanced gore and dismemberment mechanics. It was grotesquely beautiful to watch a zombie’s flesh slowly peel off its face, revealing layers of viscera as it takes a blow from an axe.

The Beast feels like a solid meld of the best parts from Dying Light and Dying Light 2. Techland clearly listened to the community.

The Beast

You assume control of Kyle Crane, the main character from the original game, who has become half beast and half survivor due to an infection. I did not look at the skill tree while playing, but you can, after inflicting enough melee damage or receiving it, activate the beast mode. During this monstrous rage, you can literally crush skulls in your bare hands, and you are strong enough to fistfight volatiles. The day and night cycle is now enhanced with amazing dynamic weather. Rain makes electricity damage more deadly, but it also quickly quenches flames. I can’t forget that a core part of the game will be hunting down elite mutated infected, for example, I had an altercation with the gentlemonster seen below.

During my time with Dying Light: The Beast, all I kept thinking was that the Dying Light community is going to love this game. The action is intensified, the lighting not only enhances the game’s beauty but also amplifies the horror, and finally, the combat feels incredibly engaging.

You will be able to parkour or fight through hordes of the undead in Dying Light: The Beast on August 21, 2025, for $59.99, on PC via Steam/Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S go wishlist it now on your preferred platform.
