Last night, Sony released their second-quarter financial report for 2024. Some of the interesting numbers include almost 4 million copies of PlayStation 5s being sold. But also how successful the Astro Bot is in terms of sales. The charming, fun-to-play, and incredibly polished platformer has officially sold 1.5 million copies in just two months. Why is this good news (at least for them)? Considering it’s a full PlayStation 5 exclusive debut for a relatively new IP, these are great numbers.

Just 1.5 Million for Astro Bot?
This is not Astro Bot‘s first rodeo on the market. There have been two “two bigger” brothers to the game out on the market:
– Astro Bot Rescue Mission from 2018, available on the original PlayStation VR
– Astro’s Playroom , which was pre-installed on the PlayStation 5 as a tech demo for the Dualsense controller.
We can also talk about an earlier debut for Astro themselves, as the cute little character appeared in The Playroom. Similarly to Astro’s Playroom, it was a pre-installed title that acted as a tech demo for the Dualshock 4 and the PlayStation Camera. But all three of these titles have something in common. They were small games that were made for unique hardware.
As such, when it came to the release of Astro Bot, it was up in the air whether or not Astro’s first big game debut would be successful. And it was. It garnered overwhelmingly positive review scores. It launched with a 94 on Metacritic. Now Sony has confirmed that it sold over a million copies. If you think about it, it’s quite the feat considering Astro has only been around to show off the technology under the hood of recent PlayStation hardware. It is great to see that a homebrew platformer for PlayStation studios can get so much love from the players without a massive IP name attached to it. But one can wonder just how well Astro Bot will perform over the holidays.
