Ubisoft Montpellier Add To Ubisoft’s Woes

Ubisoft Montpellier

Recently, Ubisoft has been facing several challenges and controversies that have raised concerns about the company’s practices and management. One significant issue that has affected Ubisoft is the poor financial report, which has led to delays and cancellations of some of its games, such as Skull and Bones and Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. Moreover, Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, faced backlash after his comments on the ongoing strike at the company, leading to further criticism of the management.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft’s problems are far from over. Ubisoft Montpellier, which created Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Rayman, has recently come under fire for reports of toxic behavior and exhaustion. Beyond Good and Evil 2’s creative director, Michael Ancel, departed the firm in 2020 after allegations of toxic conduct, raising questions about the studio’s culture and working environment.

In addition, the firm is currently under investigation by Montpellier’s Inspection du Travail as a result of an exceptional quantity of developers taking sick leave and feeling burnout. Given that Ubisoft Montpellier is in charge of some of the company’s most anticipated games, this development is concerning.

The present state of affairs at Ubisoft Montpellier is concerning for both the business and the gaming sector as a whole. It raises concerns about the gaming industry’s culture and workplace as well as shedding insight on the company’s internal problems. The bad press the firm is getting might hurt other Ubisoft games from various studios since customers might be hesitant to support the company. Ultimately, the recent incidents at Ubisoft Montpellier and the business as a whole highlight the need for stronger work procedures, more responsibility, and openness in the game industry.

That’s Not All The Bad News For Ubisoft Montpellier

As we said, they already lost Michael Ancel which put WiLD in doubt. Then in the past week according to Kotaku, the staff at the studio were told their managing director had left Ubsisoft. Again not an ideal situation following being under investigation. Guillaume Carmona had been away from work for a while and the reasons behind the departure were not revealed for legal reasons. Ubisoft did reveal this to Kotaku in an email

The health and wellness of our teams is an ongoing priority. Given the length of the development cycle with Beyond Good & Evil 2, the Montpellier development team is undergoing well-being assessments through a third-party for preventative measures and to evaluate where additional support may be needed.

For the troubled company, it seems to be bad news following bad news. Personally, I don’t believe that Beyond Good and Evil 2 will ever get released. It’s also the game with the longest development cycle ever.
