Owlcat Games recently offered fans a look behind the scenes of the third-person action RPG The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The new dev diary is a collaboration with former NASA astronaut and ISS commander Leroy Chiao. It showcases the studio managing to blend realism and playability.
One prominent example is that real astronauts use tethers so they don’t float off into space. That wouldn’t translate well to a game, so magnetic boots replaced tethers. Another example is that astronauts tend to favor spicy food to regain some of the sensations that are lost while in space. This means a lot of the characters eat or crave spicy food.
It’s pretty much accepted that if a game takes place in space, the weapons will still make noise. It’s just one of those things, like how lasers in media make some sort of pew-pew noise. The team opted to make the game sounds a little more realistic by muffling some of them; players will have to use vibrations, breathing, and radio sounds as audio cues.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will launch on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, and on console via Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Fans can wishlist the game now.
