Where Gaming Begins

The Next Elder Scrolls Game: Castles

The critically acclaimed and beloved franchise The Elder Scrolls launched its latest title “Castles” yesterday. Castles is the successor to Fallout Shelter, a mobile game released in June 2015 with new elements. After checking in throughout the day, I’ve come to tell you my first impression.

Core Gameplay

If you enjoyed Fallout Shelter, you’ll enjoy Castles. You are the new King/Queen of your land and take residence in a mighty castle which you can build room by room. Each room can house different workshops such as a kitchen, a loom, or a smithy. You can also build bedrooms, altars, and other amenities. Most of the workshops produce resources with Food and Oil being of critical importance. Resources like wood, iron, and burlap are used to craft items or expand the castle. You can sell excess resources via repeatable offers for gold. Gold can be used for various things such as upgrades to equipment.

Eventually, you can build a war room permitting you to send out mighty adventures and lowly servants to battle your foes. You send out a band of three that battle waves of enemies, whether bandits or goblins. The party will have different abilities depending on which weapon they have equipped. Armors and shields will also help keep your party alive. Health potions and resurrection scrolls are also available if things go poorly for your party.

The last main mechanic has to do with your ruler. Rulers reign until their death, in which either your heir or another servant will take the throne. Rulers will be presented with different dilemmas. These dilemmas can either be resolving disputes amongst your servants, trading one resource for another, or matters of state regarding the Empire at large. These decisions will impact your relationships with particular servants, all servants of a specific race, or can even get your ruler killed!

Soundtrack

The soundtrack is not a huge part of this game but it’s also an Elder Scrolls game. The soundtrack is relaxed and reminds me of tracks in Oblivion and Skyrim. There is an altar that allows you to marry two servants together. When they seal their marriage with a kiss, it plays the classic Elder Scrolls theme on an Organ.

My Thoughts

Overall, I think that this is a fantastic game. I know people tend to roll their eyes at mobile games, and Fallout Shelter. Elder Scrolls: Castles feels like Fallout Shelter 2.0 with some mechanics added and some removed. The monetization is fair with nothing being overtly paid to win. You can also use crystals, the “exclusive currency” of the game, to buy your own Adoring Fan who will walk around the castle to collect resources for you. When it comes to whether or not I’d recommend Castles I’d say to at least give it a try. This game has more personality and at the end of the day, it’s an Idle game. You’ll log in a few times a day and that’s that.
