Prince of Persia: Lost Crown Team Reportedly Dissolved

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

First reported by French Journalist, Gautoz, the team at Ubisoft Montpellier behind Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown has been dissolved by Ubisoft. Responsible for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, the studio was denied work on a sequel after sales failed to meet expectations. The studio itself was not shuttered.

On release, I gave the game an 8.9. In my review I said: “For fans of metroidvanias or action platformers in general, and with the added bonus of being priced at only $50, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown unquestionably deserves your attention, and I hope we see a sequel in the future.” Apparently that sequel will not be coming. This is truly a shame because the game was such a breath of original and fresh air from a publisher known mainly for Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. The studio did such an amazing job with the game that it made me forget previous Prince of Persia iterations were not done in that style. The Metroidvania genre fit this title so perfectly and the developers so lovingly crafted and tailored the game to that experience.

As of January 2024, Insider Gaming reported that the game had gained 300,000 players and made $15 million in sales against a budget of $200 million. Gamers will continue to complain that all we get is sequels and creative bankrupt IPs, but we get those titles because they sell well. As demonstrated by folks not buying this awesome game. Whether the game was perfect or not, it was an extremely solid foundation to build on. It was extremely impressive for a first attempt at a Prince of Persia in this style. While I haven’t finished the DLC yet, it so far is also extremely solid.

This report comes after a slew of news of Ubisoft delaying AC: Shadows and reports regarding a Tencent buyout. Who knows what the future holds for Ubisoft, but I have high hopes for the next project that Ubisoft Montpellier tackles.
