PlayStation Stars Suffering A Rewards Problem?

PlayStation Stars

If you’re a PlayStation owner who also happens to have a PlayStation Plus Subscription, then you’re likely familiar with PlayStation Stars. If this doesn’t ring a bell, let us explain. PlayStation Stars is a free-to-join loyalty program. If it sounds up your alley, you can opt-in here. The official description of the program states that you can use your skills to “collect unique Digital Collectibles and earn rewards. Complete Campaigns, earn Points and show off your Digital Collectibles”. If you also happen to have a PlayStation Plus subscription, then luck you: there are more benefits coming your way. The official description says:

“PlayStation Plus members who also join PlayStation Stars will earn Points with every Eligible Purchase made on PlayStation®Store. The Points you earn can be redeemed in your Rewards Catalogue for available items that may include Digital Collectibles, select game titles, and more.”

Sounds confusing? Let us explain using a real-life example. When I purchased Black Myth Wukong I paid £54.99. That added 550 reward points to my PlayStation Stars balance. Now I can use these points to redeem a reward. This reward could be a game like the recent Dead Rising Remaster that is worth 12,000 points, or more PlayStation Store credit. A handy feature for fans that is very similar to Xbox’s reward scheme. In their case, I can either redeem my points for credit or increase my Game Pass Ultimate
“Alrighty then. What’s the catch and why did you bring PlayStation Stars into discussion?” you might ask.

The Current Problem With PlayStation Stars

At the moment, when I sign in to the service I don’t see the option to redeem points for credit. I knew we had to relog for the updated Terms of Service but this removal of credit in the credits of reward section is not consistent. I’m based in the UK – and some people here can still see rewards while others can’t. The problem seems to be similar in the US. I also spoke with friends in Australia and they can still see the same rewards options they always have. To add insult to injury, this happened before the date Sony said we needed to agree to the new terms as seen below.

What’s with this lack of consistency then? Why can some people still access rewards, while others are locked out by the new Terms of Service? It’s certainly not the first bullet PlayStation Stars didn’t dodge. The service also suffered an outage in the Summer. Other confirmed changes to the service include: the points you earn are only valid for a year instead of the usual two, and purchasing subscriptions doesn’t award you with any more points. How do you all feel about this change?
