In 2011, Techland released Dead Island, a zombie game that has become a beloved franchise. As an action RPG, it took five years from its announcement to reach the hands of gamers. The game’s popularity led to a standalone expansion called Dead Island Riptide. Following its success, Techland created the critically acclaimed Dying Light, with Dying Light 2 released in 2022.
Meanwhile, Deep Silver has been dealing with numerous issues with Dead Island 2, which has experienced multiple delays and development resets since its announcement at the start of the last generation of consoles. Finally, in December 2022, the game was re-revealed with a release date. However, the release date was pushed back from April 21st to April 28th, and the game has recently gone gold. Deep Silver has also given fans a good look at the gameplay, which can be seen on their official website.
Dead Island 2 Gameplay
The video is an extended gameplay demo showcasing weapon types, environmental kills, and brutal zombie slaughtering. The FLESH system, which is demonstrated in the gameplay, allows for various methods of dispatching zombies. Such as melting them, torching them, electrocuting them, and blowing them up. This system is quite violent, as Bloody Disgusting noted in an article that “depending on where you strike a zombie and what weapons you use determines how much damage is progressively done to that particular area. If you use a bladed weapon, repeated slicing will cut through skin and clothing, reach the muscle, and eventually expose the bone underneath. It’s even more impressive that this is all generated on the fly.” While I was previously skeptical about the game based on earlier footage, this gameplay trailer has piqued my interest as it effectively demonstrates how the mechanics and the FLESH system work in the game.
