Chase Bethea Introduces “Caribbean Noir” With Duppy Detective Tashia Original Soundtrack Launching June 2

Duppy Detective Tashia Original Soundtrack

The world of video game music continues to evolve, but few soundtracks arriving this year carry a concept as distinctive as the one behind Duppy Detective Tashia. Multi-award-winning composer Chase Bethea is set to release the Duppy Detective Tashia Original Soundtrack on June 2, introducing audiences to a musical style he describes as “Caribbean Noir.”

Created for SpriteWrench’s upcoming mystery adventure, the soundtrack blends cinematic tension, Caribbean musical influences, jazz-inspired atmosphere, and supernatural intrigue into a soundscape designed to be as important to the experience as the story itself.

A New Sound Inspired by Caribbean Folklore

Duppy Detective Tashia is an upcoming point-and-click mystery adventure from SpriteWrench, an independent studio founded by Jamaican developer Glen Henry. The game draws heavily from Caribbean folklore, placing players in the role of Tashia, a young woman who finds herself investigating a murder mystery within the mysterious Halfway Market, a supernatural gathering place populated by duppies, spirits rooted in Caribbean legend.

While the game’s setting already stood apart from many contemporary indie releases, Bethea saw an opportunity to create a musical identity that would be equally unique.

According to information surrounding the soundtrack’s development, the project began with a creative challenge: deliver a score that felt cinematic, noir-inspired, distinctly Caribbean, and unsettling all at once. Rather than relying solely on traditional orchestral techniques and digital production tools, Bethea pursued a more hands-on approach.

Learning a New Instrument to Shape the Soundtrack

One of the most interesting aspects of the soundtrack’s creation is Bethea’s decision to learn bass guitar specifically for the project.

Despite having no prior experience playing the instrument, he purchased a bass and taught himself how to perform the parts that would ultimately become a defining component of the score. The resulting performances helped establish the rhythmic foundation of what he now refers to as Caribbean Noir, a style that combines noir storytelling aesthetics with the groove, movement, and cultural identity of Caribbean music.

The soundtrack’s Bandcamp listing credits Bethea with performing bass, djembe, and xylophone, underscoring the personal involvement he brought to the recording process.

Music as a Storytelling Tool

Rather than serving as simple background music, the seven-track soundtrack was developed alongside the game over the course of approximately three years. The score was designed to reinforce the emotional beats of the narrative while helping establish the atmosphere of the Halfway Market and its supernatural inhabitants.

Preview tracks currently available showcase the soundtrack’s range. Pieces such as “Half-Way Market” and “Consider the Source” highlight a blend of ambient textures, noir-inspired jazz influences, orchestral elements, and Caribbean rhythmic foundations. The soundtrack’s official tags include “Caribbean Noir,” “Noir Jazz,” “Orchestral Hybrid,” and “Video Game Music,” offering a glimpse into the project’s stylistic ambitions.

For a game centered on mystery, investigation, and folklore, the music appears positioned as a key element of the overall world-building experience.

What Is Duppy Detective Tashia?

For those unfamiliar with the game, Duppy Detective Tashia follows its titular protagonist after a chance encounter leads her into the Halfway Market, a hidden realm populated by spirits and mythological figures inspired by Caribbean folklore.

Players will investigate a murder mystery, gather clues, question suspects, and uncover the stories behind the market’s supernatural residents. The game combines visual novel storytelling, detective work, point-and-click exploration, and puzzle-solving elements. A playable demo released earlier this year received positive feedback from players interested in narrative-driven mystery games.

The title stands out in the indie space for its commitment to showcasing Caribbean culture and folklore, an area that remains underrepresented within the broader gaming industry.

Soundtrack Launch and Listening Party

The Duppy Detective Tashia Original Soundtrack officially launches on June 2 via Bandcamp. The release includes seven tracks that collectively define the Caribbean Noir concept Bethea developed during production. Pre-orders are currently available, with several preview tracks already accessible to listeners.

To celebrate the soundtrack’s debut and the upcoming release of Duppy Detective Tashia on June 8, a special listening and release party will take place exclusively on Bandcamp on June 2 at 4:00 PM PST.

As indie developers continue exploring new cultural influences and storytelling approaches, the collaboration between SpriteWrench and Chase Bethea demonstrates how music can play a central role in establishing a game’s identity. Whether Caribbean Noir becomes an emerging subgenre or remains unique to this project, the soundtrack represents an ambitious attempt to create something rarely heard in modern game music.

With its blend of folklore, mystery, and original musical experimentation, Duppy Detective Tashia and its soundtrack are shaping up to be one of the more distinctive indie releases of 2026.
