Where Gaming Begins

Static Dread, When Doing Your Job Invites Cosmic Horrors

Light is supposed to bring on clarity, be a sign of hope, a clear path to where you would like to go. In solarsuit.games’ Static Dread: 15 Nights at the Old Lighthouse (Static Dread), light works as a double edged sword, summoning Lovecraftian horrors and guiding ships to safety. Hell of a mix! So in Static Dread you are a new lighthouse keeper whose job is to keep the lighthouse working all night, while also directing ships to the proper docks. Sounds simple right, well cannot forget the eldritch horrors, haunting villagers, and price gouging fisherman who you will have to interact with while just trying to make ends meet.

No One Is At The Door

Static Dread

Static Dread’s core mechanics are quite simple, keep the lighthouse lit up, make sure the light is rotating, direct ships via radio to the proper docks, and never let anyone in the lighthouse. Life in this game is far from simple though, you have to manage your energy levels so you can stay awake, and decide whether or not to send ships to an unknown entity that is likely a dark force that eats them.

The design of this game enhances the eerie ambiance, flat cutout two-toned characters layered upon a PlayStation 2-esque 3D world does not sound like a typical horror experience. This game delivers the fear and anxiety in such a way that you distrust the mundane in game moments. That is a regular cargo ship just looking for a safe port, not a ship carrying the plague.

Static Dread Will Be A Hit During Steam Next Fest

Not wanting to completely ruin the magic of experiencing this demo first hand, Static Dread has a familiar feel of games where you have to manage a certain amount of task against all odds, think Five Nights At Freddy’s mixed with dialogue choices that directly impact your game. I used to look at classic horror movies and wonder how could people be legitimately scared by this, then I was frightened by a “static” image of a kid in a raincoat and his grandma. If you are into cosmic horror games, Static Dread: 15 Nights at The Old Lighthouse is a game to add to your Wishlist, and to make sure to check out the demo during this upcoming Steam Next Fest.
