You may be aware of a return to Aloy for PlayStation 5. This is the upcoming remaster for her debut game, Horizon Zero Dawn. Early 2017 saw the first release of the game on the PlayStation 4. 2020 saw it arrive on PC, and in a few weeks, we’ll see it on PlayStation 5 as a native release. Guerilla Games’ first RPG release takes place in the 31st century in a post-apocalyptic USA. The story’s map spans Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. However, with the upcoming remaster recently announced, why not revisit where the journey started back in 2017?

At the time of its release on PlayStation 4, Horizon Zero Dawn underwent optimization to leverage the capabilities of the PlayStation 4 Pro. The remaster will follow a similar path, with support from the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro. However, as I mentioned earlier, it was an opportune moment to revisit the original version, which is compatible with the PlayStation 5. Additionally, the PlayStation 5 supported the game’s 4K 60 fps playback. With that in mind, it was time to look at how the game runs today, albeit with a boost from the PlayStation 5 hardware.
Horizon Zero Dawn – How The Original Holds Up Today
So if we look above, we can see a small sample of gameplay. This was captured on the PlayStation 5, with the game running at 4K 60. Indeed, the game boasts impressive visuals in many aspects, although it does have a unique drawback. Character models are high quality, but the sequel and upcoming remaster will give a more realistic look. However, even though this game is nearly a decade old, the world that Aloy explores still looks as stunning as it did when it was first released.

The gameplay is still a treat, and combat and riding mounts are still smooth. The sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, has improved every aspect of the game. Remastering it to match its sequel is the reason mentioned. I will add that playing nearly a decade later feels just as enjoyable as it did back when I launched it for the first time on the PlayStation 4 Pro. The game is a wonderful addition to any catalog. Nothing has changed in the years that followed; the game is still one of PlayStation’s finest franchises. This release set the framework for what is to come and did an excellent job in the process.
