Anticipating Fear: The Silent Hill 2 Remake Is Near

Silent Hill 2

The Silent Hill 2 (SH2) remake is set to drop on October 8, 2024, and I am beyond stoked. Whenever someone asks me what the scariest game I’ve ever played is – it’s easily a tie between the OG Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame 2. I remember one of my buddies growing up invited me over when he got his hands on SH2 and we’d wait until it got dark out and played in total darkness with headphones on to add to the scare factor.

The Toluca Prison sequence had so many parts that almost scared me so bad I couldn’t continue – the bathroom jumpscare, the random demonic growl, being able to lock onto things with your gun but due to the fixed camera angle, you weren’t able to figure out what you were aiming at – if the remake comes even close to capturing some of that primal I might piss my pants fear, it will be a banger. I am trying to be mindful though that some of that fear came from not knowing what to expect. I had the instruction manual and a couple of writeups from gaming magazines to go off and nowadays folks have written entire dissertations on Silent Hill 2. You could easily go down a YouTube rabbit hole explaining all the lore behind all the monsters.

I was a little apprehensive that Bloober Team is collaborating with Konami for this remake. I thought the Layers of Fear games were decently scary. I played a little bit of The Medium but it didn’t really hook me so I quickly moved on. To be fair, Konami also fumbled a bit with the highly anticipated Silent Hills getting canceled and both Silent Hill: Ascension and Silent Hill: The Short Message flopping hard. However, after watching the official story trailer and a couple of gameplay demos, I think this remake has a shot at capturing some of the old magic.
