Tamriel is in the middle of a cold war between the Third Aldmeri Dominion and the Third Empire. The First Great War ended in a stalemate on paper but was a Dominion victory in reality. The Empire was forced to disband The Blades, Forsake Talos, and portions of Hammerfell were to be ceded to the Dominion. Twenty-five years have passed between the end of the war and the start of the events of TES V: Skyrim. With it being generally understood that the Dominion is preparing for another war, they may be biting off more than they can chew this time around.
A characteristic of elves that TES has adopted is that they live much longer than most of the other races in Tamriel. With that being said, it takes them much longer to reach adolescence. Assuming there is a baby boom after the war, the races of men (Imperials, Nords, Bretons, and Redguards) are able to replenish their ranks faster than the Dominion can. One of the deciding factors of any conflict is the manpower pool a fighting force is able to take from to replace losses. For this reason, The Empire would have a numerical advantage over the Dominion.
The Mede Dynasty only came to power three years before the start of the war. Before their ascension to the throne was a period known as the Stormcrown Interregnum. Various warlords wanted power and the entirety of the Empire suffered during this period. At the start of the Great War, the Empire was simply not prepared for the Dominion onslaught. With twenty-five years of peace, however, the Empire is in a much better position both politically and economically. This stability allows for much better chances in the war to come.
True Legion Grit
The military doctrines of the two Tamrielic superpowers are very different. The Imperial Legions mainly consist of frontline heavy infantry and shock cavalry. Orcs and Nords are often the best infantry in the Legion and Colovian Imperials are probably the best horsemen in Tamriel. Alternatively, in the Dominion military, High Elves make the best Battlemages in the land. Wood elves are expert marksmen and make up the bulk of the archer corp. The only other race in the Dominion is the Khajiit who aren’t renowned for any particular fighting role. This means they can be used as all-rounders. On the battlefield, there are few things more important than army composition and the Imperial Legion fields the tactically more diverse force and will have the edge in the field (generally speaking).
Those are some aspects that would allow the Third Empire to even the score in the upcoming Second Great War. There are of course some things that work against the Empire that can be covered in a future article. But until then, long live the Empire!
