Per the official Disney Website, Strange World is a Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed adventure that introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. All of this sounds like a great time at the movies with your family. However there was one problem, most people did not know Strange World existed.

According to a report from Variety, With $11.9 million from 4,174 North American cinemas over the weekend and $18.6 million for the five-day holiday period, the animated film drastically underperformed predictions for its North American release. The film was projected to bring in $30 million to $40 million between Wednesday and Sunday until estimates were cut downward.

Due to the on-screen representation of LGBTQIA+ people, the movie generated controversy prior to its release in a number of different nations. This is the easy cop-out in my opinion. LGBTQIA+ representation was also front and center in Wakanda Forever and has grossed $600 million worldwide. Not comparing the two but just pointing out some inconsistencies. The real reason in my opinion this movie failed is due to marketing. Most didn’t even know Strange World existed.

Who Knew Strange World

For a movie like this to succeed in theaters, marketing is essential. It is insufficient to staple it to a blockbuster motion picture and hope that most people who are talking or using their phones would pay attention. This is why TikTok and Youtube are even more crucial for marketing movies. How many times I have been on TikTok and seen a video that attracted my attention is beyond my ability to count on my fingers. If Disney wants its business to be successful, it must show its product to consumers where they are. If not, simply make it available on Disney Plus and carry on.

No, I am not a professional in the film industry, but I am a guy who is currently very interested in watching Strange World after learning that it exists. I’m willing to bet there are a million more just like me. We cant support things we do not know exist.
