If you ever wanted a family to hate Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? provides this for you. This family has some major issues, this is obvious for a lot of reasons, the main one being someone in the family has possibly killed Uncle Marcus, who is played by Andy Buckley who most will recognize from The Office, to gain control of his money. Let’s talk about who poisoned Uncle Marcus and why they had the motivation to do it in our review.
Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? is an intriguing FMV murder mystery with a spin: Uncle Marcus has been poisoned and during the annual family quiz, you play as his niece Abby trying to uncover the truth and try to save him before it’s too late.
Unlike other FMV games I have played, this title really places it in our hands to play through the game multiple times to even get a hint of what actually happened. Most FMV titles even after one playthrough you have a very good idea as to what happened however, Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? focuses on the who and why.
The totality of the gameplay in this title lay within the confines of a family quiz to celebrate the birthday of Abby’s mum Felicity. This family game night happens each year online and is the perfect opportunity for Abby to uncover what happened during a meeting that just so happened the day prior.
The quiz is simple, a family member takes center stage and asks questions, the other members team up to attempt to get the questions correct. This poses as the perfect opportunity for Abby to ask questions about the meeting to discover who could have poisoned uncle Marcus. While the family member on center stage is asking questions you must decide at times if you are going to answer the questions asked or press your partner for information.
On the surface, it seems easy for you to just not play the game and ask questions about what each member of the family was up to during the meeting. However, this plan will backfire quickly as each member is quick to shut down. For the most part, their feeling is if Abby wanted to know details of the meeting she would have bothered to show up.
The cast of characters in Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? is on a wide range of the personality spectrum from Abby’s hateful Aunty June to her death marching loving cousin Bradley. Each offers something unique to the story and their personalities are very complementary to each other. One of my favorite characters to learn more about was Toby, played by Al Weaver, which fans of other Wales Interactive games will recognize from The Complex. From his oddly placed scenery and outright suspect demeanor, he immediately became my suspect number, although it took me a bit to gather enough evidence to accuse him.
Being able to accuse each member of the family is key to finding out what really happened. Again, without the multitudes of playthroughs, which offers a slew of different scenes, you will never know who really did it. The key is being able to accumulate this evidence which can be tricky. Knowing when to ask questions and when to just play the quiz could lead you in a direction where spending time with any member of the family is a waste of time. This can be frustrating at times as you just need a tad bit more information to be able to accuse a new member of the family. Don’t feel bad as good old Uncle Marcus will die a few times before you are able to save him.
Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? is an FMV that I recommend players give a chance, it has few holes and gives players a bit of a change-up amongst other titles in this genre. Of the things that had me turn a bit of a side-eye at times was the swings of emotions that didn’t pay off too well. For example, at times there are moments that seem very serious that lead Abby to tears, just for Uncle Marcus to seemingly get closer to his death bed in a manner that tries to be comedic relief. These moments do not seem to be an actor issue, but more of a design issue. In my opinion, someone could write these particular moments to be serious all the way through.
Overall, this title is a must-play for those who are fans of Wales Interactive in addition to those who are looking to give this genre a chance. If you are looking to take a more relaxed approach and enjoy a good story/murder mystery Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? should definitely be on your list.
