Ubisoft has revealed that the last quarter of the financial year has yielded disappointing financial results. It appears according to this report that Ubisoft is “facing major challenges as the industry continues to shift towards mega-brands and long-lasting titles that can reach players across the globe, across platforms and business models”. What caused this loss in profit for this quarter? It seems an example is being made of a couple of titles.
Today, Ubisoft is revising its Q3 2022–2023 net bookings target, now expected at approximately €725m versus the prior target of approximately €830m. This reflects the more challenging environment mentioned previously, which notably resulted in the lower-than-expected performance of Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Just Dance 2023.
It looks as though recent poor sales have forced Ubisoft to take action. The report also stated that we can “discover the beauty of Skull and Bones” as a beta is on the way. It seems that, as a result of playtests, the much-delayed game has been hit with a further delay. They are now aiming for an “early 2023–2024” fiscal year release.
What Else Ubisoft Announced
While the financial news is where people’s attention is drawn, there is another piece of news from Ubisoft. Skull and Bones was announced nearly six years ago and has been hampered by delays and development resets. So fans will no doubt be disappointed to see yet another delay. The alpha gameplay leaked and the game had a release date and was up for preorder. Furthermore, we have more bad news from the report. They already recently canceled four games and now it seems, three more are following, as the report stated:
Ensure all our energy is focused on building our brands and live services into some of the most powerful within the industry. As a consequence, we have decided to cancel three unannounced projects, on top of the four already announced in July 2022.
It’s a turbulent time at Ubisoft right now, with delays and canceled games. What do you think about all of this? As always, we’d love to hear from you. Hopefully, this is the last delay we hear for Skull and Bones. It’s certainly had a troubled development. All this follows the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake being delayed indefinitely and various delays for Beyond Good and Evil 2. Maybe the next Ubisoft Forward event can give the company more positive headlines. Another delay and seven canceled games is far from an ideal look for the iconic company.
