TopSpin 2K25 is a simulation Tennis Game that is a huge step into the right direction! The last Top Spin game was released in 2011 and a lot in the gaming industry has changed since then. TopSpin 2K25 was developed by Hangar 13 (Who most notably worked on the mafia series) and published by 2K Sports. Hangar 13 had a hefty task to revitalize an all-but-dead franchise and they managed to do so almost flawlessly. While I applaud the team at Hangar 13 this was published by 2K Sports and if you know anything about 2K Sports they have a certain style, and let’s just say they put their fingerprints all over this one for better or worse, but we will touch on that later.

The Devil is in the Details

So first things first let’s touch on the good. TopSpin 2K25 is absolutely beautiful both audio and visually. The courts feel unique, from the sun to shadows, to the lights, everything is stunning to look at.  Audio-wise TopSpin is equally as impressive, The sound of the rackets occasionally hitting the court or your shoes dragging across dirt are both great touches! I can tell a lot of care and attention to detail went into making us feel immersed in the world of tennis, all the way down to tiny details like the PA system in other countries speaking different languages.

TopSpin 2K25 Gameplay is King!

There is a lot to enjoy in Topspin but the most important thing is the gameplay is flat-out fun! This is coming from a casual who only ever enjoyed Mario Tennis or Wii Sports tennis growing up. I am the furthest thing from an expert on the sport but I can’t seem to put this game down. For starters, an in-depth tutorial helps you understand the basics and general tennis movement. The controls are simple and easy to learn anyone can pick up and play. Where this game shines is the gameplay.

TopSpin 2k25 My Career

The majority of players’ time will be spent in My Career where you create your own MyPlayer and go on a journey to become a tennis champion. Character customization here is pretty good and has a lot of options. One that I loved was the option to give your character prosthetics. Now My Career mode here is simple and to the point. Each month you get to compete in One Training, Special Event, and Tournament.
There’s a large emphasis on energy with each event taking up more energy depending on how far you have to travel. As you progress in the story you unlock homes to purchase in different countries which help you retain stamina. The MyCareer mode extends to online play as well. There’s World Tour Mode which allows you to play online tournaments with your My Player.  I will be the first to tell you it’s addicting! I told myself one more match several times and before I knew it hours had passed by.

Swing And A Miss

TopSpin 2K25 does have some flaws. First and Foremost, currently, there is no ability to play against friends online. It’s disappointing, however there is supposed to be an update that adds this feature down the line. I wanted more excitement and storylines to follow with the career mode. In my opinion, 2K should have taken a page out of NBA 2K’s book with a narrative-driven story. Tennis is perfect for that type of cinematic story as it is primarily a solo sport. I understand this is the first game so hopefully, down the line, we will see more added to career. Speaking of career, you can’t play MyCareer offline at all which is a complete bummer. Little to no modes work without the internet in typical 2K fashion.

The roster feels a little light. Currently, there are only 25 playable characters with notable names such as Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic missing. Hopefully, they can be added with a future update. For those wondering if there are microtransactions in this game, 2K has become known for those over the last few years. However, I am happy to report that they are not nearly as bad as they are in NBA 2K. They aren’t forced whatsoever as simply playing the game gives decent VC. The good news is that MyPlayer characters cannot be upgraded with VC( So no pay-to-win).

Top Spin Is Worth A Try

All in all, TopSpin 2K25 is a huge step in the right direction. Despite a few flaws, the gameplay is extremely fun. I encourage anyone to try this game. Yes! Even if you are not a tennis fan, who knows you might become addicted like me.
