Earlier This month was the annual Tokyo Gameshow and many major game publishers went all out. And especially many Japanese publishers went all out. One of those was SEGA, but it was their subsidiary that was most talked about. RGG Studios showed off a trailer for their upcoming title Like a Dragon Ishin. However, RGG had its own summit showcase. There it was shown that there were three Like a Dragon games in development.
During the RGG Summit, Ryu Ga Gotoku showed more footage of Like a Dragon Ishin. The title is an overhaul remake of a PS3 title that was only in Japan. This title has been one that fans have been requesting for years. Early last year, there was an interview with the series producer about wanting to remake the series internally. And in a recent interview, he stated that it was the success of Ghost of Tsushima that convinced the team that a period piece could be successful.
Along with this confirmation, came the news that the game would be getting the Kiwami treatment. This means that game will be a full remake from the ground up with new characters replacing former models. They used character models of popular characters from the later titles. Some of those were Like a Dragon 0, 6: Song of life, and the recent Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
With this Like a Dragon: Ishin Kiwami is the ultimate all-stars lineup of fan-favorite characters in a historical period piece. As well with this news came an interview confirming that the series will be known as Like a Dragon in the west. The series has been known as Ryu Ga Gotoku or Like a Dragon after the studio’s namesake. This helps to keep the title with a universal name globally going forward. The game will be launching on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Windows, and Steam on February 21st, 2023. Watch the action-filled trailer below:
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE
Now at the RGG summit, we didn’t just get an extended trailer and preview of Ishin. We also got the reveal that there is another Like a Dragon game coming. This is was the confirmation of a shorter side story called Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. In the trailer for this game we find out about what happened after the Conclusion of Kiryu’s story at the end of Like a Dragon 6: Song of Life. Set to fill in the gaps between 6 and 7 when he runs into Ichiban and crew.
However, while this will be another game, it will be smaller than other titles. Set to be shorter in length and scope it is set to act as a bridge. However, this game will also be Launching in 2023 as well on all platforms, but, we do not have an official date yet.
This announcement was met with excitement as fans old and new love Kiryu, the OG Dragon of the franchise. But there was a lot of love for Ichiban and his crew. This leads us to the third and final announcement.
Time for Double Dragons
After the set up of more Kiryu came the surprise, but exciting announcement everyone had been hoping for. To close out the Summit with a bang, came the final trailer revealing Like a Dragon 8! That’s right Ichiban and crew are back, but this time with the help of the Dragon of Dojima himself.
After the trailer, we were told that The Man Who Erased His Name will help lead to Kiryu’s involvement with Ichiban. As well that this game will continue the turn-based action we saw in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. We were told that more will be revealed on the title later. However, we know it will be coming to all platforms as well in 2024.
It seems that RGG Studios are on another level with three Like a Dragon titles coming all within the span of a year and a half potentially. And this comes hot on the heels of them just having launched Yakuza Like a Dragon in 2020 and Lost Judgment in 2021. Fans can rest assured that the series is in good hands and a good future ahead.
