Supermassive Games are well known for their horror titles with their first title Until Dawn all the way back in 2015. Since then we’ve seen them introduce us to The Dark Pictures Anthology. So we’ve seen the first three titles in that which were Man of Medan, Little Hope, and House of Ashes. Then a few weeks ago we heard of a new title by them that is not part of the Anthology. That game is the upcoming horror The Quarry. For more information on the game in regards to the story, the official website will explain more.
The Quarry, like all the developer’s previous titles, will focus on the player’s choice. Your actions will shape the events of the game and we can guess, that it affects who lives and who dies. With this, it means the game won’t have one end but multiple ones. The Quarry is no different. A recent interview with IGN shows this has definite replay value.
One Horror That Will Keep You Entertained
Supermassive has definitely given you replayability. This game is going to offer a massive 186 unique endings. So that offers a considerable amount of gameplay compared to the games in The Dark Pictures Anthology. Therefore, how has Supermassive done this. The game’s director Will Byles explained this to IGN. This is what he had to say.
We write it like a movie screenplay… actors are used to a 100-page script [on a feature film], the script for this is over 1000 pages. [The actors] can get very alarmed.
We have to shoot 50 pages a day, which is unheard of. It’s a mad amount of footage.
A lot of this footage is repeated, with the actors having to go back to the start of scene and then act out a different potential pathway that players may choose. So, as you can imagine, a lot of tables were created to document where each character’s story was going at any given time.
We worked out 186 different endings for those characters, not just alive or dead… the stories that they have on the way through are massively varied.
Branches really are a mathematical nightmare. It’s just exponential.
These branches can have big and small consequences. Some will significantly affect the story’s overall arc, while others will impact in game relationships. We really like the idea of giving you context, so you can have the exact same conversation, but know, that, that person has just killed someone and that context changes, everything. Will Byles talks about The Quarry
The Quarry Offers You More
As well as a very daunting number of ending, Supermassive offer a more relaxed approach. The game will launch with a movie mode. So, you can in effect, treat the game like a full-length feature film. Therefore if this is your thing, it launches on the 10th of June. It will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
