Tencent, a multinational tech company is one that operates mostly in the shadows. It has its hands financially in many different gaming companies. Such as Riot Games, Sumo Digital’s parent company, Digital Extremes parent company, Leyou and most recently, Kuro Games. Kuro Games is the developer of Wuthering Waves. Wuthering Waves is an open world action RPG that is available on mobile devices and the Epic Games Store with over 5 million downloads, and a nearly flawless score. A few days ago, Kuro Games announced in an internal memo that Tencent now owns 51% of the company, but what does this mean for the company and Wuthering Waves?

Wuthering Waves’ Shadow Broker

In the memo it was stated that, similar to other companies that Tencent has a lot of money invested into. That the way Kuro Games would operate will not change:

Insiders said that the change was a transaction between external shareholders and had nothing to do with the decision-making of Coolo and his management, and that Coolo would be similar to Riot Games and Supercell, and would still operate independently, and there would be no change in the strategy of independent operation.

While on the surface this initially sounded worrying. As recent consolidation efforts from Sony with Bungie and Firewalk Studios and Microsoft with Activision Blizzard King and Bethesda have not yielded the best results. Tencent seems to only be acquiring companies for the sake of owning them and earning the revenue from those companies in return. Allowing companies to continue working on their titles so long as they make the money they need to, like Kuro Games not doubt will. Considering their title is similar to the Hoyoverse games with its Gacha character gambling mechanics. As someone who has not played Wuthering Waves, I am not sure if there will be any noticeable changes. But this news does show that the game is very lucrative for that much investment to be made.
