Survival games are a genre we’ve all encountered, but many don’t persevere through. They can be very unforgiving and frustrating, but once you put in the effort, they can be very rewarding. We have a wide range of these games available across multiple genres now, and so many more to come. It doesn’t look like the genre is going anywhere anytime soon, even if most won’t play them. Even more so, if you’ve been looking at the upcoming games on Steam, one wishlisted title has sat in the top 2 for some time. The Day Before was delayed until March this year after changing the engine, and fans seem to be really wanting it. I can go through my Steam wish list and bring some other upcoming titles to your attention.
Upcoming Survival Games
There appears to be some that are very much at the forefront when browsing trailers for upcoming games. So let’s show you what’s coming.
- Sons of The Forest – The sequel to The Forest is due next month for PC. Once more your survival is dependent on your gathering resources to craft.
- The Deep – An upcoming base-building survival game, on an alien world underwater.
- Rooted – Developed in Unreal Engine 5 is this post-apocalyptic survival game. According to Steam you need to “explore an ancient overgrown world full of dangers”.
- Frostpunk 2 – The original was a popular city-building survival game. It now gets a sequel set 30 years later
- Forever Skies – This is a first-person survival game set post-apocalypse. You need to return to Earth and have to find resources and craft upgrades
So those are some of the survival games heading our way, at least this year. Personally, The Day Before and Rooted are very much at the top of those for me. Forever Skies on PC has a demo to try now, so PC gamers can at least get a glimpse. As for the titles available now, we have a few to choose from.
Minecraft
This game has probably done more for the genre than any other game. Players can go deep into survival, use it as a creative peaceful learning tool, or combine the best of both worlds. If you want the game to be simple or deeply complex, it caters to either taste. The sales figures alone speak volumes, as it’s one of the best-selling games of all time.

No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky is a game that Hello Games have completely changed the fortunes of with several major updates over the years. You mine for resources, trade and build equipment, and craft upgrades, just to name a few amazing things you can do. It’s also a huge game. You could visit every planet in your game and explore every inch above and below the surface, but you wouldn’t have enough time in your life.

Green Hell
The official website gives a good description of one of the more popular survival games, which can be read below. If you don’t want to face such a harsh environment alone, it can also be played multiplayer.
In Green Hell, you can use fully realistic survival techniques. You will start fires, build camps, create weapons, and use tools. You will learn how to source materials and food from your environment. You will crop plants and hunt the animals. You will have to mind your health, collect food and water, and learn how to treat diseases and injuries. A sophisticated self-diagnosis mode will help you with that task. Besides physical health, your psychological condition will also have a huge importance.

Subnautica
This game has you crash-landing on an alien planet. Your objective is simply to escape the planet with one huge problem. You crashed in the ocean, so you need to survive the perils below water and gather resources, craft tools, and equipment to progress toward your objective. Three years later was the release of the sequel Subnautica: Below Zero

Stranded Deep
Another game in which you are stranded somewhere unknown, this time due to a plane crash, is Stranded Deep. The official website gives a simple description of the game.
In the aftermath of a mysterious plane crash, you are stranded in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Alone, without any means to call for help, you must do what you can to survive.
Basically, you’re thrown in at the deep end, needing to hunt for resources to build tools, etc to stay alive. The trailer for the game can be found here.

The Forest
We mentioned one of the upcoming survival games, “Sons of the Forest.” However, before that, the franchise started here. Once more we have our player the only survivor of a plane crash and you find yourself lost in a strange forest. According to Steam, you’re not as alone in the forest as you think, and you need to survive “against a society of cannibalistic mutants.” To do this, you gather the forest’s resources and build what you need to stay alive and figure out the mystery behind this strange forest.

Retreat To Enen
The newest survival game on this list launched on PC last year, with a console version set for this year. Set over 1000 years into the future on the planet of Enen. You have various locations you need to scavenge for materials, build your base, and hunt for food. This one is a more peaceful approach where you’re not fighting off an enemy.

So there you have it, if you’re a fan of the genre or just getting into it, you have a good selection to try.
