Back in July, we saw the announcement by Valve about its rival to the Nintendo Switch. So at the time, this announcement came just after the announcement by Nintendo of the OLED version for the Switch. But where the new Switch model launched on time it seems Valve’s device won’t.
This came when Valve posted news of a delay in the shipping of the Steam Deck. So instead of launching on its original 2021 release date, it will begin launching in February next year. And the reason for the delay seems to be affecting various companies globally.
The reasons behind the Steam Deck delay
Valve posted on their blog that the problems they’ve faced in manufacturing this have been all too common. The issues in the supply chain and material shortages are what Valve stated as the reasons they can’t meet the original December release date. However, Valve isn’t alone in this situation as it’s affecting the motor industry as well as other console manufacturers. It’s even affected PC parts. This is what Valve had to say.
The launch of Steam Deck will be delayed by two months. We’re sorry about this—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren’t reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates.
Based on our updated build estimates, Steam Deck will start shipping to customers February 2022. This will be the new start date of the reservation queue—all reservation holders keep their place in line but dates will shift back accordingly. Reservation date estimates will be updated shortly after this announcement.
Again, we’re sorry we won’t be able to make our original ship date. We’ll continue working to improve reservation dates based on the new timeline, and will keep folks updated as we go.
And if you managed to secure a preorder for December originally
It seems for customers that managed to secure one of the first preorders, this Steam Deck delay means that instead of a December shipping, you will get a revised date in February. The blog post gives a link to let you “view your updated expected order availability and FAQ,”.
What do you make of this news? Were you one of the people who had secured an order at the time of announcement? As always we’d love to hear your thoughts.
