Major publisher backing accelerates progress on Vaultbreakers as BetaDwarf drops new gameplay trailer and public playtest.
Indie developer BetaDwarf has secured a strategic investment from Square Enix to supercharge the development of their upcoming action RPG, Vaultbreakers. The announcement comes alongside the release of the game’s first full gameplay trailer and the launch of a weeklong public playtest, running July 3–9.
Vaultbreakers is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious indie games of 2025 — a top-down, high-stakes co-op action RPG blending intense brawler-style combat, dynamic world interaction, and both PvE and PvPvE multiplayer modes. Players take on the role of Champions fighting to reclaim lost relics, escape from evolving dungeons, and shape the outcome of an unpredictable, reactive world.
Square Enix Backs Vaultbreakers: A Milestone for BetaDwarf
The investment by Square Enix marks a pivotal moment for BetaDwarf, best known for previous cult hits Forced and Minion Masters. With this backing, the studio can now expand production capacity, refine key gameplay systems, and further strengthen its community-driven development model.
“Square Enix is always looking for high-quality games and talented development studios,” said Hideaki Uehara, General Manager of Business Development at Square Enix. “Vaultbreakers instantly impressed me with its multiplayer depth and immersive game world.”
“Getting support from Square Enix feels like a game-changer,” added Steffen Kabbelgaard, CEO and Game Director at BetaDwarf. “We’ve already run over 15 community tests with 50,000+ players. Now, with this investment, we can hit the gas and take Vaultbreakers from great to unforgettable.”
Public Playtest Now Live: July 3–9
BetaDwarf is inviting players around the world to try out Vaultbreakers firsthand through a new public playtest, available by signing up at Vaultbreakers.com or by participating in a Twitch Drops campaign.
Running until July 9, 11:59 PM CEST, the playtest introduces new gameplay systems and features based directly on community feedback from earlier builds.
