Sports games are a mixed bunch. This year alone has seen titles like MLB The Show and Matchpoint – Tennis Championships. The Nintendo Switch also gave us Switch Sports and Mario Strikers: Battle League. This year also sees the final FIFA game to be released by EA. That being FIFA 23 after the fallout between FIFA themselves and EA.

Motorsports are also on the upcoming list with F1 22 at the start of the year and F1 Manager 2022 coming soon. That’s also a new genre of sports primarily as part of the football/soccer catalog with Football Manager. It may not be announced but Football Manager 2023 is expected soon, with an anticipated return of Juventus.

Do We Have Too Many Sports Games

That’s a topical debate, as if you look at EA alone they have most sports covered in recent years. Some gamers will see another Madden or FIFA on the upcoming titles and cry enough. However, on the flip side, some cry out for more sports games. Personally, I’d like to see more emphasis on quality. Tennis fans have been crying out for a successor to Virtua Tennis or Top Spin.

Golf is now reliant on whatever EA gives us. The closest we had to an alternative was HB studios with The Golf Club. It’s a far cry from when Links ruled the golf scene. So it seems whatever your sport, there’s likely to be a game for you. However, you may not find the variety or even the quality. So to go back to the question. It’s potentially yes and no, no we don’t have enough quality titles but there have been a few slightly less popular titles launched. Each sport will have a fan base so we not see changes for some time. What do you think about this topic? As always, we’d love to hear from you.
