Roshpit Champions 2 at Summer Game Fest Play Days

Roshpit Champions 2

I had the opportunity to try out Roshpit Champions 2 from PM Studios, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Action RPGs are one of my comfort games. They take me back to a simpler time when I’d rip Mountain Dew Code Reds, blast nu-metal, and grind away at games like Champions of Norath, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, and Hunter: The Reckoning. The demo had plenty of heroes available to play, and since my time was limited, I selected one of the characters that came equipped with a big ol’ sword.

Less Grind, More Fun

I played the demo with the mouse and keyboard, and the controls were fine. I hope this game has controller support, because it’s pretty fast-paced, and it’s probably a personal preference, but that makes it easier to kick back and sink hours into one of these games. I noticed right away that leveling in the starting area went quickly. Harrison Floyd was on hand and explained that one of the goals of Roshpit Champions 2 is to reduce the grind. Harrison also mentioned that while each hero has a unique skillset, you can also mix and match skills from other classes. Once I started to get my hero’s skill rotation down, I was flying around and destroying mobs, but there’d still be enemies that’d get drawn into the fray where I’d have to utilize a bit more strategy. I died a lot, but I appreciate that there weren’t any penalties for it, like losing gear durability, gold, etc.

Another thing I noticed right away was that if I saw something I could climb on or swim to, it led to more loot or collectibles. The first couple of quests were designed to unlock the characters in your base camp – fight a boss to unlock the blacksmith, those sorts of things. There was also a series of mini-quests that involved eliminating a certain number of each enemy and circling back to the minimal grind; it felt like a natural part of the gameplay loop and led to even more rewards. My time with Roshpit Champions 2 flew by, and I’d love to try out a longer demo so I can delve into the mid- and end-game content.
