The Assassin’s Creed franchise has come full circle with its latest release, Assassin’s Creed Mirage. After reinventing itself as an RPG open-world series with Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, Mirage returns to the gameplay style of the original 2007 game. This nostalgic trip raises an interesting question – should Ubisoft remake the first Assassin’s Creed?
As a long-running series, accessibility is key for Assassin’s Creed. Newcomers should be able to experience the full storyline, while veterans can revisit their favorite chapters. Unfortunately, the original Assassin’s Creed has limited availability today. The game can be played on PC via Ubisoft Plus or Xbox thanks to backward compatibility. However, PlayStation owners are locked out, as the game was never ported to PS4 or PS5.
A full remake could solve this issue and reintroduce players to the Animus, Parkour gameplay, and open-world stealth that started it all. Ubisoft could update the visuals, smooth out mechanics, and expand areas that felt limited back in 2007. Look at how the recent Resident Evil remakes completely reimagined the original games while keeping their essence.
The success of Assassin’s Creed Mirage proves there is an appetite for old-school Creed. The game’s Basim shows how the modern storyline connects back to the early games as well. A remake would let veteran assassins relive Altair’s adventure with fresh eyes, while acting as the perfect starting point for new fans. Ubisoft could even tie it into the metastory like Mirage does.
