There can’t be many gamers who aren’t familiar with the hit game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG. It is one of the most famous battle royale games that lead the way for the flood of battle royales that we would see after its 2017 launch. We’ve seen other alternatives over the years with Battlefield using a similar mode and also Call of Duty with Warzone. Vampire the Masquerade a popular RPG series has seen one in Bloodhunt. PUBG as it became known also made it easier for games like Fornite to become popular as well.

Both launched in 2017 just a few months apart. They may not win big awards but the games are extremely popular. Why then is PUBG such a well-liked game? Well, in my opinion, it’s a great game to play with friends the game really relies on a strong squad. It’s also never stale, as you are unlikely to repeat the performance of the previous match. When I played it with a couple of friends we came first for the famous chicken dinner. We then tried to follow up on our success and with the same squad, same map, and starting area chosen. We didn’t make the top 10 in the next game. Every game is a challenge no matter how well you play.

If a game on the whole is good, people will play it maybe not forever but people will flock to it. Look at Sons of the Forest and the way it refreshed the original games’ player base or even look at another battle royale Apex Legends. That game continues to pull in new players and fans with content and events.

If we take a look at the player count for PUBG what do we find? It seems it’s hitting around 284 million active players a month. At time the of writing, it’s still doing really well. It’s also now free to play so anyone catching it on Twitch and wants to play can with ease. I believe PUBG is doing well in 2023 because it is genuinely a fun game to play. It has a good mix of realism and the gunplay is just solid especially if you are not into futuristic or more cartoon-based BR games. I think while we may not talk about it as much as we used to it is still a good battle royale game to load up with friends to play for a few hours.

As for you are you a fan of the battle royale genre? Have you jumped into any of the main contenders recently? We love hearing all your thoughts on this and other news. So why not get in touch and let us know your views?
