At the beginning of this generation, Sony’s Ps4 price point was a huge factor in player purchase. Being $100 cheaper was a great selling point for Xbox 360 gamers to move over to the PlayStation 4. This time around Sony’s PS5 may not have that advantage. SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan had some interesting comments when sitting down with GameIndustry. When speaking on how the global pandemic could affect the Ps5 sales Ryan said:
“I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can. I don’t necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games… all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform.”
According to some industry insiders, the PlayStation 5 could range from $499 to even $549. It will be interesting to see how the next-generation console pricing war plays out.
