Now one of the most iconic film franchises in recent times is that of the Predator. Though we’ve seen many films since Arnold Schwarzenegger faced the legendary hunter. There have not been as many video game adaptations of Predator. I proposed the idea of a survival-style game that would work for the franchise. Back on to the point that there are not many video games about the Predator universe, the most recent game was Predator: Hunting Grounds. Though when that launched 4 years ago it was on PC and PlayStation 4. Sadly gamers who only owned an Xbox One missed out.

The game is currently in the hands of a new publisher and is receiving a fresh start, as evidenced by the trailer below.

We also have a statement from the CEO of IllFonic, Charles Brungardt who said the following

This game has a strong, enthusiastic player base and a vocal community that wants to see the game updated and supported. Now that IllFonic is publishing games, we knew we had to get Predator: Hunting Grounds back. We knew we needed to get back to the Chopper!

So now Sony is no longer the publisher of the game, we also see from the trailer description that more DLC is coming as well as balance improvements. The game will be updated to support it on the PlayStation 5. Though the big part of the description is that now “Xbox fans will have the chance to take on or become the iconic extraterrestrial warrior on Xbox Series X|S later in the year as well”. This is also in the press release along with a road map for the next year or so.

What is coming to the jungle in 2024/2025 –

  • April 2024: Patch 2.49 will cover the currently released PS4 and PC: Steam / Epic Predator: Hunting Grounds. The focus is on player movement, Fireteam weapon rework and balance, Predator weapon balance, and UX/playability improvements. More to come in the team’s patch notes.
  • Late 2024 Release: Xbox Series X|S, PS5 Release: Predator is coming to Xbox. This release is focused on next-gen running on Unreal 4.27, Vivox, and Wwise, with a Standard Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition offered.
  • Winter Release, 2024: New Predators
  • Spring Release, 2025: More New Predators

Sadly it does seem that to play this on Xbox, you will need to upgrade from the Xbox One console to the Series X|S.

So Let’s Look At What Predator: Hunting Grounds All About

To give a refresher on what the Predator game is all about for the new Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 players. If you look at the listing on both Steam and the PlayStation store we see the following.

Hunt or be hunted in this asymmetrical multiplayer* shooter that pits man against Predator. As part of a Fireteam, complete missions before the Predator finds you. Or be the Predator and hunt your prey.

  • Be the Predator – hunt down the opposing Fireteam, using deadly alien weaponry to stalk your prey.
  • Get to the chopper – complete challenging missions as part of a four-person Fireteam and escape.
  • Wield human and alien weaponry – fight with a state-of-the-art arsenal as the Fireteam, and deadly tech like the shoulder-mounted Plasma Caster, Combistick and more as the Predator.

Steam however gives more information on the game with a mature content description

Predator: Hunting Grounds is a first/third-person hunter-shooter where players take the role of a human mercenary or the Predator. The frenzied combat features instances of intense violence highlighted by frequent gunfire, explosions, screams of pain, blood and gore, and instances of dismemberment and mutilation. Some maps show skinned corpses with partial nudity. One mission chain sees the mercenaries locate and destroy packages of drugs in a cartel compound. Dialogue includes examples of Strong Language

The reviews on Steam are 37 mostly positive recent reviews and all-time 2,997 mostly positive. When I look at the PlayStation store I see an improvement from the original launch. So now we see an average score of 4.07 out of 5 from 20,831 reviews. 63% were 5 stars and 13% were 4-star reviews. So it’s now picking up momentum and looks like Predator: Hunting Grounds will be attempting a comeback.
