The Pokémon Company International has officially announced the highly anticipated return of Mega Evolution Pokémon to the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), launching globally on September 26, 2025. Titled Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution, this new expansion kicks off the upcoming Mega Evolution Series, reintroducing fan-favorite mechanics first seen in the XY Series and last featured in the Sun & Moon Series.
What to Expect from the Mega Evolution Expansion
Originally teased during Pokémon Day 2025, the Mega Evolution expansion will bring Mega Evolution Pokémon ex back into the fold with exciting new gameplay elements and collectible features. Notable returning characters include Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex, both making their debut in this new format with stunning new artwork and game-altering stats.
Unlike standard Pokémon ex, these Mega Evolution Pokémon ex offer significantly increased HP and attack power but come with a steep cost—opponents take three Prize cards when a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex is Knocked Out.
Additionally, Mega Evolution cards will evolve directly from Basic Pokémon like Riolu, skipping intermediate evolution stages such as Lucario, adding a strategic twist to deck building and match tempo.
Stunning New Card Art and Rarity Tiers
Collectors and players alike can look forward to a new ultra rare card art style unique to Mega Evolution Pokémon ex. These cards may feature the silhouette of the regular Pokémon form, offering a visually distinct aesthetic that sets them apart in any collection.
This expansion will also extend ultra rare treatments to Item, Stadium, and Pokémon Tool cards, breaking the traditional limits of ultra rare card types within the TCG.
