Sony appeared to be following up on the promise made by Jim Ryan, the head of SIE. He said they had more studio acquisitions to make. So this was they added Haven and Bungie to the PlayStation Studios family. He spoke on a recent PlayStation podcast which has been transcribed by VGC.
We’re in a really good place with PlayStation Studios and have been for the past few years. The critical success and the commercial success of the games that they’ve been making… that has given us permission to invest heavily in content creation.
We’re growing our studios organically and we’re growing through acquisition. We acquired five studios during the course of 2021, we’re in discussions with Bungie and we have more planned. This is getting us into a virtuous cycle where success begets success.
A post on ResetEra highlights a recent update to its PlayStation Studios webpage. If you go to the webpage, at the time of writing, you’ll see an unannounced addition. What we see on the left-hand side of the banner is Norman Reedus as Sam from Death Stranding. That game was made by Kojima Productions. However, it seems to only show when viewed on a mobile device. As I don’t see the addition on my laptop but do it on my phone. This can be seen in the screenshot below. It started rumors of a Kojima Productions purchase. However, after what Jim Ryan stated, it was a fair assumption.
After leaving Konami in 2015, this company was formed by Hideo Kojima. Death Stranding was the first title by him under his own studio. It also recently got upgraded for PlayStation 5. Kojima is also supposed to be creating s new title for Xbox as an exclusive. As reported by VGC this was still in the works at the start of this month.
The Kojima Response
He responded directly on Twitter. He Tweeted firstly the new banner. Not a helpful tweet that had fans asking if he was trolling
So roughly quarter of aj hour later he further adds information clearing the rumours up. However it seems like he knew all along and was happy to let people wonder
The translation reads according to Google translate
It sounds misleading, but Kojipro has been and will continue to be an independent production studio.Kojima having fun with the fans
So there you have it. Kojima is not part if Sony. And it seems to indicate he’s not wanting to be part of anyone’s company. Therefore after the way he left Konami, it’s no surprise he wants to remain independent.
