So you’ve probably heard about the digital Xbox Series X. We have no idea if this narrative will yield fruit because, as we covered in previous news, Phil Spencer of Microsoft wasn’t planning to release a mid-generation refresh. On the other hand, we’re all probably aware of the rumors about a PlayStation 5 Pro. You can find more information on those rumors here. Sony did, however, unveil big hardware news in the form of the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim.
So what exactly is the deal with the PlayStation 5 Slim? Both the new standard and digital models will eventually replace the existing units when stock levels run out. Yes, you read that correctly the older models will no longer be produced. If we look at the details on the PlayStation Blog post we find a little more on what Sony is bringing to the table.
PlayStation 5 Slim – What We Know
The disc model comes with “an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage”. So the attachable drive is also available for the digital model but it will cost extra. The price for this will be.

We know it’s a slimmer console. Therefore the question is what has changed in the dimensions and weight. Well, the new model according to Sony is “reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24%” We also have four separate cover panels. Sony states the top portion offers a “glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte”. They also announced that the US launch is planned for sometime in November of this year.

Can I Customize My New Console?
This is still an option. The blog post breaks it down like so.
A variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. Prices for the PS5 Console Covers will start at 54.99 USD | 54.99 EURO | 44.99 GBP | 7,480 JPY. Additional colors will be released in the future.
This means whatever we can do currently will still be an option. But if you own the older model console covers they will not fit the new model. The post also contains the full specs for both of the new units.
