Acclaimed Prison RPG Back to the Dawn Heads to Xbox with New Content
Back to the Dawn, a pixel-art survival RPG set within the walls of a high-security prison, is officially launching on Xbox Series X|S on July 18. The Back to the Dawn Xbox release will also coincide with it being on Xbox Game Pass. Developed by Metal Head Games and published by Spiral Up Games, the title makes its console debut after a successful run on Steam Early Access, where it earned a 92% positive rating from players.
The game puts players in control of Thomas the Fox, an investigative journalist framed for exposing government corruption. Thrown into the unforgiving environment of Boulderton Prison, Thomas must navigate a complex web of alliances, threats, and opportunities as he works to clear his name—and break free.
Console Launch Paired With Major 1.0 Update
Coinciding with the 1.0 release on PC, the Xbox launch will feature the new Black Panther Arc, a major narrative expansion that introduces Bob the Panther, an undercover officer with a secret agenda. This addition brings new quests, explorable areas, and difficult moral decisions that expand the game’s already layered story.
The Xbox version is fully optimized for console controls, ensuring a smooth gameplay experience for players on Series X|S. The title will be available for $19.99 USD, with a limited-time launch discount dropping the price to $16.99 during its first week.
A Deep, Decision-Driven Prison Sim
Back to the Dawn blends classic RPG elements with prison survival mechanics. Players must carefully manage their relationships with inmates, engage in underground activities, and investigate the larger conspiracy that led to their incarceration. Every choice made can have far-reaching consequences, reinforcing the game’s emphasis on player agency.
Visually, the game adopts a detailed pixel-art style that balances charm with grit, while character interactions reflect a range of motivations and loyalties. Whether building alliances or planning an escape, players must weigh their options carefully.
Key Features:
- Full Xbox Series X|S controller optimization
- Play as Thomas the Fox, a journalist framed for a crime he didn’t commit
- Dynamic prison survival systems with branching narratives
